Yesterday, you may have seen one of our fire trucks out and about, stopping on the side of the road, and wondered what we were doing.

Our brigade has started inspecting fire hydrants throughout the Allansford area to make sure they are accessible and have the correct signage in place for when they are needed.

Unfortunately, we've found that a large number of hydrants are difficult to access because they have become covered by long grass, dirt, or other debris.

We're asking our community for a small favor. If you have a fire hydrant on or near your front lawn, please take a few extra minutes to clear away any grass, weeds, or built-up dirt around it. This small effort can make a big difference, allowing firefighters to quickly access water when responding to an emergency.

Interconnected smoke alarms provide an extra level of protection for your home.

When one interconnected smoke alarm detects smoke, every connected alarm throughout the house sounds. This means you'll be alerted to a fire no matter where it starts, giving everyone in the home more time to escape safely.

Interconnected smoke alarms are especially important for larger homes or homes with multiple bedrooms and levels.

📢 National AusAlert Test – Today at 2:00 pm (AEST)

Today at 2:00 pm, a test AusAlert Critical Alert will be sent to mobile devices across Victoria and other eastern states. This includes most mobile phones, as well as some smart watches and tablets.

📱 What to Expect
âś… Your device will vibrate
âś… A loud siren-like sound will play for around 10 seconds
âś… A message will appear clearly stating that it is only a test

⚠️ Important: AusAlert does not replace the VicEmergency app.

🙌 Prefer not to receive the test?
As a Critical Alert, it cannot be switched off in your device settings. If receiving the alert may cause distress or disruption, turn your device off or place it in aeroplane mode before 2:00 pm and leave it that way for at least one hour.

Over the weekend, you might have spotted some of our firefighters using the playground at the Allansford Recreation Reserve as part of our Breathing Apparatus (BA) refresher training.

The playground provided a great environment for our members to practise navigating tight spaces while wearing BA, helping build the skills needed for search and rescue operations in low-visibility and confined environments. It was a practical way to refresh important skills while keeping the training engaging and enjoyable.

Training like this helps ensure our firefighters are always ready to respond when the community needs us. A big thank you to all of our members who gave up part of their weekend to attend the training session and continue developing their skills to better serve the Allansford community.

Powerboards are a convenient way to power and charge multiple devices, but using them incorrectly can increase the risk of fire.

To help keep your home safe:
• Never overload a powerboard.
• Only use powerboards as directed by the manufacturer.
• Regularly check for signs of damage, such as cracked casings, loose plugs or frayed cords.
• Avoid plugging one powerboard into another.

Using powerboards safely is a simple way to reduce the risk of electrical fires in your home.

Does your smoke alarm chirp occasionally? That's a sign the battery is running flat and needs attention.

Consider replacing older smoke alarms with models that have a sealed 10-year lithium battery. They provide long-lasting protection and eliminate the need for regular battery replacements.

Remember:
• Never ignore a chirping smoke alarm.
• Test your smoke alarms regularly.
• Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years.

Only working smoke alarms save lives.

The colder nights have arrived, and while electric blankets are a great way to keep warm, it's important to use them safely.

Remember to turn your electric blanket off before going to bed to help reduce the risk of fire while you sleep.

A few simple safety tips:
• Check your electric blanket for signs of wear or damage before each season.

School holidays are the perfect time to make sure everyone in your household knows what to do if a fire starts.

Take a few minutes to practise your home fire escape plan:

• Identify the two quickest ways out of every room.
• If your home has a second storey, make sure everyone knows how to get out safely.
• Choose a meeting place outside, such as your letterbox, where everyone will gather.
• Make sure everyone knows how to call Triple Zero (000).

Most importantly, once you're out, stay out and never go back inside for people, pets or belongings.

A simple plan and a quick practice could make all the difference in an emergency.

Congratulations to four of our members who have recently completed the Operate BA Classic course.

This qualification allows our firefighters to wear Breathing Apparatus (BA) while operating externally at incidents where smoke and hazardous conditions prevent crews from getting close safely. It provides our brigade with additional capability to safely assist at fires in challenging conditions.

Training is a huge part of being a CFA volunteer, and the firefighting pathway is just one of the many opportunities available. Whether you're interested in firefighting, specialist skills, community education, or supporting your local brigade behind the scenes, there's a role for everyone.

Last Friday, Allansford CFA was happy to help out the Russell’s Creek Football Netball Club by giving their netball courts a good wash-down ahead of Saturday’s games.

The courts had become a bit slippery, so our crew helped get them clean and safe for players to take the court.

We’re always glad to lend a hand and support our local community where we can.
