Today is the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, the first time in history that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples were counted in the national census. NPY Women's Council honours the strong Anangu and Yarnangu women who fought for change in the Referendum, and the legacy they continue to carry forward today.

Today also marks the marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week and the landmark High Court’s Mabo decision in 1992. We acknowledge there is hard work that still needs to be done to achieve true reconciliation for First Nations Peoples.

Speaking up and being listened to is essential for NPYWC's vision of all Anangu and Yarnangu living well in both worlds. You can read about our key advocacy priorities on our website and stand alongside women living on NPY Lands in creating lasting impact. You can also follow the link in our bio to donate and support our all Indigenous-board to advocate for what matters most for themselves, their families and their communities.

A statement from NPY Women's Council:

We hold sadness in our hearts and stand strong in our culture today on National Sorry Day. The day each year when we reflect on and remember the strength of Stolen Generations survivors and their families. The 1997 “Bringing Them Home” report has seen only 5 of its 83 recommendations fully implemented to address the harm caused by past governments to children who were stolen from their families. We must always remember and be informed of the deep impact of this policy on every Indigenous individual and family. It was a dark period for our nation, and one we are still healing from and experiencing today. You can find out more here: https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-sorry-day-from-sorry-to-action/

Today NPY Women's Council has made a submission in response to the Northern Territory Care and Protection of Children Legislation Amendment (Every Child Matters) Bill 2026.

We are deeply concerned it lowers the threshold for intervention into families, expands coercive powers, increases pathways into long-term care, fails to adequately address poverty, housing instability and service shortages; and risks causing further harm to vulnerable children, families and communities.

Following decades of strong advocacy from Anangu and Yarnangu minyma tjuta (women) and their communities, Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women’s Council is proud to launch Ngura Kutju - NPYWC Cross Border Place in Mparntwe/Alice Springs.

This tri-state child protection hub supports Anangu and Yarnangu children and families across the NPY Lands, recognising that state borders don’t reflect the way communities live, move, and stay connected to family and culture.

Guided by the voices of Anangu and Yarnangu, Ngura Kutju responds to the need for ‘one place, one file, one phone’ - making it easier for families to access child protection support with a more transparent and coordinated system

Tjitjiku tjukurpa - one story for all Anangu and Yarnangu. Learn more about how Ngura Kutju brings together all of the parts of the story here: https://www.npywc.org.au/ngurakutju

"I am very sympathetic - ngayulu ngalturingkupai - towards children who are sent away for medical care, when they are really sick. We help them out with our ngangkari skills. They really need our help." - Iluwanti Ken

We’re so thrilled that Iluwanti - Pitjantjatjara Elder, Ngangkari (traditional healer) and Tjanpi Desert Weavers artist - is the subject of the portrait that has just won the 2026 Archibald Prize. We feel incredibly privileged to have her working alongside us at NPY Women’s Council.

She is pictured here with Betty Muffler, another strong Pitjantjatjara woman, Ngangkari traditional healer and Tjanpi artist, who is also very dear to us. Betty was also shortlisted for the 2026 Hadley Art Prize!

The Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women’s Council expresses deep sorrow at the loss of Kumanjayi Little Baby.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and community, and wider family in Mparntwe and Central Australia. The loss of a young life is felt deeply across our communities - it is a loss that touches everyone, and a loss that should not have happened.

We recognise the strength of women, families and communities in coming together to care for one another during times of terrible circumstances and grief. We ask that our community continues to show this resilience and support for each other in what will be tough times ahead. Our hearts are heavy.

May she rest in peace.
