Children's Ground

Children's Ground A First Nations organisation in Australia, creating a new future for the next generation of children - one of justice, opportunity & excellence ❤️💛🖤

Children's Ground integrates services across five key areas. Together, they address the determinants for social, cultural and economic wellbeing. We align these with cultural knowledge and global leading practice. We are creating the evidence, over 25 years, to create systems change. Every child born today should experience a lifetime of opportunity, entering adulthood strong in their identity and

culture, connected to their local and global world, and economically independent. If all children can experience this basic right, then whole communities will enjoy wellbeing.

“We have the oldest living cultures in the world. We know what is possible. We see it on the ground.”

Our CEO Jane Vadiveloo is speaking directly to this moment. The situation for First Nations communities across the Northern Territory and across the country is serious. Racial tropes, attacks on First Peoples’ rights and cultures, legislative changes threatening to remove more children from their families. These are not distant concerns. We see the impact every day.

And yet, what we see in our communities are phenomenal Leaders and people with a vision for the future of their children.

This is not a time to look away. It’s a time to rise up, stand up, speak up and lead with action. To support the solutions that First Nations people are driving.

Getting On Country means crossing floodways, covering long distances on remote roads, and showing up for families, children and Elders across West Arnhem Land and Central Australia, and our 36 vehicles are what make that possible.

On this date in 1988, First Nations leaders from across the Northern Territory presented the Barunga Statement to Prime Minister Bob Hawke during the Barunga Festival.

Developed through the leadership of the Central Land Council and Northern Land Council, it called for a treaty, recognition of First Nations rights, compensation for dispossession and greater authority over decisions affecting First Nations communities.

The Statement secured a public commitment from Hawke to negotiate a treaty by 1990. That commitment was never fulfilled.

Nearly four decades later, many of the issues raised in the Barunga Statement remain unresolved. Communities continue to call for self determination, greater decision making authority and governments that work in genuine partnership with First Nations peoples.

The Barunga Statement reminds us that First Nations communities have been putting forward clear solutions for generations. The challenge remains governments acting on them.

The minute the bus pulls up, everything changes. You see it in the kids. Their whole bodies light up.

This is what it takes to keep those journeys going. Fuel costs are rising and we need your support before 30 June to keep First Nations children connected to Country, culture and learning.

🧺 Did you know weaving is a vital part of sharing culture, stories, and connection in First Nations communities?

At Children’s Ground, master weaver Sylvia demonstrates this by collecting pandanus and dyeing leaves with the Knuckey Lagoon women’s group. She then teaches these skills to the next generation through our Early Years and youth programs.

By setting up engaging learning spaces, Sylvia ensures children experience and understand this important cultural practice. As Sylvia says:

“My grandmother and my mother taught me to weave.” 💛

A big day at Emily Creek swimming in the kwatye (water), learning language and discovering a speckled bowerbird's nest 🌿💦

We began our day with healthy routines and preparing sandwiches together before the children jumped into Arrernte language learning. There were aherre (kangaroo) jumps, kwerekwere (owl) wings and lots of laughter.

The kwatye was a favourite part of the day, with the children swimming, splashing and exploring the creek before stopping for fruit and a play in the sand. Counting, pouring, filling and comparing all became part of the fun as little hands got busy building and creating.

The adventure continued at when the children discovered a speckled bowerbird's nest and learned how the bird collects special treasures to decorate its home 🐦✨
