Save Anzac Oval - Alice Springs

Save Anzac Oval - Alice Springs The Northern Territory Government is moving to compulsorily acquire Anzac Oval for the National Indigenous Art Gallery.

We are calling upon the Alice Springs community to stop the Northern Territory Government from taking Anzac Oval.

The Northern Territory government has confirmed the controversial Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery in Alice Springs will be almost halved in size under a new masterplan.

The government recently paused demolition of Anzac Oval, which was the previous Labor government's intended site for the gallery despite pushback from traditional owners and others.

The gallery will now be built onto the Wills Terrace carpark and will be a three-storey, 4000 square metre building compared to the previous four-storey, 7000 square metre design.

Plans for a large forecourt will also be scrapped.

Anzac Oval will be reinstated as a rugby field, with restoration works set to be completed in time for the rugby season in February 2025.

Additional parking will be built on the site of the now-demolished Anzac High School.

The NT government says the Anzac Oval Precinct, including the gallery, is expected to be completed in late 2027.

How sad are the Government’s new plans for the Gallery. What a stupid place to build it.

Today's NT Government announcement represents the latest disappointing chapter in the ongoing saga that is the proposed National Aboriginal Art Gallery Project for Alice Springs.

The simple facts:

1. Senior Central Arrernte custodians want to be heard and respected around a project of this type.
2. The broader intercultural community of Alice Springs want the Government to invest in our town in a way that brings our town together - not divide it.

The incoming CLP Government were very quick to act and "save the oval section" and keep the rugby community happy.

It is a huge shame that the same effort could not have been made for re-engaging with the senior Arrernte custodians who have been consistent in their position regarding their opposition to the project on this site.

The CLP made a number of pre and post-election commitments around this project: To have an intelligent review; to share key facts and figures; and to work with goodwill to explore pathways to get this project right.

The community voices that have been speaking up with concern about this project, have endeavoured to be measured and patient, hoping the incoming CLP Government (via local representatives Bill Yan and Joshua Burgoyne), would take up the opportunity to engage with "a fresh eyes and ears" approach.

"We've made simple and succinct requests for accuracy and transparency to be placed on the public record as at Nov 2024, so all Alice Springs community members can have informed conversations at this time."

This goodwill approach seems to have been misplaced.

With today's announcementwe are seeing the new CLP Government simply push ahead with the project, repeating the same approach that has caused the problems so far.... and then just using blame game tactics; simply pointing the finger at the outgoing government and saying everything is their fault (i.e. the previous Government's).

This means that the government has diminished the size, scope, budget and potential of the project - without resolving the key cultural protocol issues.

This is a disappointing situation.

A community forum has now been called for Thursday 5th to discuss the latest announcement - and explore pathways forward
