Cadets from Units 136, 16, 109, and the SPS ACU recently put their recon, survival, and navigation skills to the test during EX Ground zero, an action-packed field exercise in the bush. Cadets tackled a range of challenging activities, including night navigation, tactical movement through dense terrain, water preservation techniques, trap setting lessons, and an introduction to fieldcraft for new recruits. These hands on sessions built essential survival knowledge while pushing cadets out of their comfort zones.
Through navigating in the dark, moving stealthily as a team, and learning practical bush skills, the cadets gained valuable confidence, sharpened their teamwork, and developed a stronger sense of resilience.

This past Wednesday night, cadets took part in lessons such as first aid, drill, and map scales. Each lesson taught important skills, including how to preserve life, how to call drill, and how to effectively read a map scale.
These lessons ensure cadets are set up for success not only within the cadet program, but also out in the wider community.

Last night cadets put their minds to the test, being taught how to read a map, grid references, movement, how to use a compass, radio communications, and navigation data sheets. These lessons prepare the cadets for what field has to offer them, giving them prior training so they can reach their fullest potential out field.

โ€œFrom grid bearing, compasses, maps and overall navigation they are the most useful things you will ever learn. Every lesson to do with these topics are always the best, especially putting the compasses to the test out field. I hope we do more of this in the future!โ€

On Wednesday night cadets explored many different key skills for the field and attended lessons such as field craft - learning how to tie up important knots, and setting up sleeping areas, essential for field succession. They also learnt shape of ground which is essential for understanding the terrain and surroundings while navigating.
