Unfortunately, we have sad news about Harvey, our beloved Hooded Plover at Pt Willunga beach. Plover volunteers found Harvey dead on the beach just last month. The beach near Blanche Point was his home for numerous seasons and with his partner, he successfully fledged 7 chicks. During this time, he withstood the elements, foxes, kestrels, dogs and humans who got too close. As we know, there’s a low success rate for eggs and chicks.

Harvey was originally tagged at Snapper Point, Aldinga in 2013 and consequently made his home in Port Willunga in 2015.
At the time of his death, he was at least 13 years old. He was a plover identity at our beach and the volunteers as well as locals who loved seeing him are all saddened by his departure.
Thank you once again to our local volunteers who do so much to support the protection of our endangered plover population.

Over 24 hours Monday we had 52mm of rainfall locally. Port Willunga creek has swolllen and burst its banks, the Linear Reserve is flooded and has cut off foot traffic between opposite sides of the valley for the time being. Water flow out to the sea has been strong and there’s a distinct brown band in the sea along the coast for now. The frogs, bird life and dogs are absolutely loving it.

Follow up from a previous post of the cliff hazard at Blanche Point, northern end of Port Willunga.
Council are not considering removal due to challenging logistics and the possibility of creating further instability on the cliff face.
A Cliff Monitoring program involving high-resolution 3D digital terrain surveys will be undertaken between July & December this year and be used to compare with the previous survey in 2022.
Ongoing risk management measures will include the use of hazard signage, periodic social media alerts for the public, prompt follow-up of community observations, and cliff hazard assessment north & south of Port Willunga Creek. Installation of signage is planned from October this year.
In the meantime, be observant of any unstable cliff structures and avoid walking under these areas as rockfall can happen without warning.

Bush Gardeners had a productive morning last Sunday. New seedlings were planted including an endangered species, and plenty of weeding, staking and mulching achieved, overseen by a couple of well-behaved Bush Gardener dogs. We were rewarded as usual with good coffee, good company and a couple of delicious homemade cakes at the picnic circle.

This Monday 13 July marks the 138th anniversary of the Star of Greece, the 3-masted iron clipper that was tragically wrecked off the coast of Port Willunga in a storm one night in 1888.
Originally built in Belfast, it had left Port Adelaide on its way back to London when it foundered on the reef. Of the 28 crew, 17 lost their lives.

Many of us have seen the bow section which is partially exposed at low tide.

The Star of Greece Symposium is being held at Waverley Park Homestead, Willunga on SAT. 25th JULY where four experts will examine the events that led to the loss of the ship. The event has sold out but there is a waitlist so go to the link and put your name down if you would like to attend.

Even though winter seems to have arrived today, last Saturday night Port Willunga was treated to one of those amazing winter sunsets and a visit from the tall ship One and All anchored offshore.

Today South Australia recorded its first confirmed case of H5 Avian Flu in a Southern Giant Petrel at Knights Beach in the Fleurieu region.
Pacific Gulls (pictured) which have been spotted recently on our beach and gulls in general are highly susceptible to bird flu.
If you see a sick, injured, or dead gull (or any other seabird) on Port Willunga beach on your walk, do not touch it.
Take a photo & call the national 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 which ensures all bird flu reports are handled immediately by biosecurity officers.

It's nearly planting time! 🌱🌱🪏☀️
Come and join us this SUNDAY, JUNE 14 as we prepare for the winter planting season. The holes will be dug this week, and if our seedlings are ready, we'll start putting them in, building on the biodiversity we've helped to create in this much-loved green space. Bring your gloves, maybe a trowel and your favourite weeding tool - or use ours - and stay for morning tea. Meet at the usual place, the picnic area at the bottom of MINDARIE ST at 10am.
