Good morning.

Currently, the CEO and Deputy Chairperson of Albury and District Local Aboriginal Land Council are sitting on a bus filled with mob on the way to protest in Matin Place in Sydney.

We are part of at least 250 mob who have made the choice to protest at the NSW Government's new Crown Lands Management Amendment (Statutory Review) Bill 2026 (the Bill).

This Bill was introduced to the Upper House of the NSW Parliament on Friday 20 March at 9.10pm. It was by stealth; described as Administrative amendments.

The Bill, by the NSW Government's own press release, seeks to severely limit NSW Aboriginal people from legally claiming unused and unneeded NSW Crown Land via the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (ALRA) NSW.

Land Councils like Albury and District LALC, exist as an instrument of the ALRA to claim land and provide benefit for all the Aboriginal people of their area.

This Bill, if unchallenged and not defeated, will enable the NSW Government to go back in time and make legal and final, leases that were held over legally claimable land,. These leases are illegal and unlawful. The High Court has already ruled in Aboriginal peoples favour on many of these. The NSW Government is seeking to alter the ALRA to make it much harder for mob to claim land.

There are currently 43,500 land claims in the NSW parliament. From as far back as 1984. The Nsw Government has deliberately stalled on approving claims while they devised this Bill. If successful, the Bill will remove approximately 30,000 legal land claims.

That is 30,000 opportunities for Aboriginal to get land back, reconnect to country, and derive social, cultural, economic, and healing benefits from country.

We have fought for so long. This Bill, and others that may come, mean we need to keep fighting.

Always was, Always will be, Aboriginal Land.
