We greatly enjoyed a visit to the hangar yesterday by members of the Twin Cities Model Aero Club. After a walk around the DC-2 explaining the processes of our restoration team we had morning tea. Thank you to our volunteers Jenny, Karen, and Victoria for setting up an excellent spread for our visitors

A huge thank you to aircraft modeller Alwyn Brunton who built this 1/8th scale Boeing 247D, the third placed plane in the 1934 MacRobertson Trophy Air Race. The huge model was installed in our hangar today, completing our set of first, second, and third place winners. Known as the ‘Warner Bros Comet’ and flown by celebrity pilots Colonel Roscoe Turner and Clyde Pangborn, with radio operator Reeder Nichols, the Boeing (NR257Y) crossed the finish line at Flemington Racecourse only 2 hours and 42 minutes behind the Uiver DC-2. Today the original aircraft is preserved for posterity at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. Thanks also to for producing the graphics for the model.

A major milestone passed! Our engine specialist Tom has just completed fabricating a new heavy duty mobile stand for the Wright Cyclone 1820 engine that he has been steadily working on for two years. The engine, which is being rebuilt to running condition, is the same vintage as those in our Memorial DC-2. Fitted to the stand is an engine mount from an Air Tractor agricultural aircraft that carries the weight of the radial engine. Tom’s attention to detail is amazing and greatly appreciated. Thanks to volunteer Neil for solving the puzzle of assembling all of the exhaust system components. Thanks also to Fastener Specialists Albury for supplying all of the high-tensile bolts holding it all together. The next system for Tom to complete is the electrics.

We were recently sent a set of photos by Judy Newland of Hawthorn that belonged to her father Horace Newland. It is unknown if Horace was the photographer but we appreciate adding these original photos to our collection. Horace was posted to Darwin with the Australian army during the Second World War.

They show the de Havilland DH.88 Comet (G-ACSR) known as ‘The Green Un’ in the 1934 MacRobertson Trophy Air Race being refueled at Darwin. Flown by Owen Cathcart-Jones and Ken Waller, the Comet was painted in British racing green and finished fourth in the race in a time of108 hours, 13 minutes.

Thank you Judy.

The Rotary Club of Albury North chose the Uiver hangar for their latest “away mission” on Tuesday, March 31, when 38 club members spent an informal evening checking out the progress of the restoration of the memorial Douglas DC-2 aircraft. And the progress was quite noticeable since the club had last visited the hangar two years previously.
Uiver Memorial Community Trust chairman Pieter Mol gave an update on the project, not only on the rebuilding of the aircraft, but also on the some of the hangar’s outreach activities, such as hosting visits by schools and community groups. He said fundraising continued to be a challenge. The trust had set up income streams through the lease of hangar space for parking aircraft and sales of the English translation of Uiver captain Koene Parmentier’s book, To Australia in Three Days but more was needed to keep the project rolling along.
The evening concluded with guest speaker, Uiver volunteer Andrew Hipwell, sharing extracts from his booklet Six Women Who Wanted to Race Across the World, that was launched at the Women in Aviation event at the hangar on International Women’s Day and will shortly be available from our online store.

Many thanks to everyone who attended our International Women’s Day High Tea. The event was a great success and we are very appreciative of our excellent speakers: Marianne Evans, Bridget Hosking, and Squadron Leader Lisa Casey. Each brought an interesting insight into their aviation careers and some of the challenges they encountered along the way

Thanks to Gaye Pattison of ABC Goulburn-Murray for her excellent role as moderator. Our team of volunteers did a great job in rearranging the hangar and setting everything up.

Thanks also to Andrew Hipwell, who was instrumental in planning the event. Andrew wrote a booklet, ‘Six Women Who Wanted to Race Across the World’, specially for the day and we sold many copies, aiding our DC-2 restoration work. The booklet will be added to our online store soon. The feedback we have received has been so positive we are likely to do it again next year — stay tuned!

An update for the mechanically inclined, this is the back of our Wright Cyclone 1820 engine that is gradually being restored with the aim of having it in running for public displays. We have two other non-running engines that will eventually be repainted and fitted to complete the DC-2.
Recently we were able to rotate the engine to its correct orientation and fit the supercharger assembly, inertial drive starter, and the Bendix Stromberg carburettor. Our engine wizard Tom is doing an amazing job of not only doing the rebuilding work but locating the parts we need, some from as far away as Canada and the USA. We are also very appreciative for the local support of Tony Ferris of Fastener Specialists, Albury for the numerous high quality nuts, bolts, and washers he has supplied for this engine.

We are pleased to advise that the second edition of ‘To Australia in Three Days’ is now available from our online shop (link at our website). Translated to English from the original Dutch ‘In Drie Dagen Naar Australië’ by Uiver pilot Captain Koene Parmentier, the book is a ripping yarn and a rare insight into the 1934 London-Melbourne Air Race
