Wimmera Mallee Weekend

Frustration at the ever-changing login requirements for this FB page, hence the big gap in postings about our events. However, we're back.

Here is a brief summary of our Ovens and Murray trip to the Wimmera/Mallee region on the weekend of 14th-16th November. 18 of us made it to Horsham despite the long drive, but, for me at least, it was a well worth the trip seeing at least four birds I have never seen before.

Day 1
We followed the outline previously provided to the group by our local guide, Suzanne from Horsham Birdlife which was to head north as far as Lake Hindmarsh and return via Glenlea S.F and Little Desert N.P. Suzanne was assisted by Phil from Parks Victoria.

During the day, we spotted splendid fairy wrens, red-capped robins, regent parrots, chestnut-rumped thornbills, and Mallee fowl.

Day 2
An approaching front provided a windy start to the day's birding. A few highlights before the weather deteriorated.

West Wail Flora Reserve - white-bellied cuckoo-shrikes
Natimuk Lake (dry) so not much to see
Sewerage Treatment Plant for a variety of water birds.
Mitre Lake - white-fronted chats and white- winged trillers
Mt Arapiles - Gilbert's whistler - heard but not seen
St. Mary's Swamp -whistling kites ...before 60kph winds and heavy rain

Some photos from the day...and yes, the first photo is NOT a bird ...but so beautif
