The Inspiration

The Gillis Conway Cup came about through the premature loss of two close friends to cancer - Richard Conway and Terry Gillis. While sitting on a pew at close mate Richie's funeral, I reconnected with another great school friend. Terry was sitting across from my wife Natalie and I, and the surgical signs of his particular struggle were painfully obvious. Without understanding the

far reaching implications, an idea that had been lingering for some time was born. Seeing a mate in such a vulnerable state, triggered the desire to help someone whom would never ask for charity. Through a number of late night conversations, sometimes over ping pong and regularly with beer in hand, Terry went on to teach me the true meaning of generosity and courage. The 24 hour ping pong challenge that was devised to raise money for a much needed escape from a harsh reality, was a fantastic success. In many ways the holiday that was enjoyed was a small reflection of the more positive impact on the remainder of Terrys time. The compassion shown by all that rallied, gave Terry a new lease on life and a smile and confidence returned that had been long in the shadows. The legacy, a charitable idea that spawned a cause worth fighting to keep alive in the memory of two great mates.
