$2,815 in fines! Then loses the bike.

At 3.50pm on Sunday 15th March 2026, Sutherland HWP were patrolling the Kingsway, Miranda when they observed a male riding an electric dirt bike in an Easterly direction on the footpath, at the time the rider was not wearing an approved helmet.

Police stopped the rider produced a Class C Learners Licence therefore being unlicensed for a motorcycle with the rider asking, "Is this illegal?"

The rider was issued with 4 infringements totalling $2815;

❌ Unlicensed for class - first offence
❌ Drive unregistered vehicle on road or road related area
❌ Use uninsured motor vehicle on road
❌ Motor bike rider not wear/secure fit approved helmet.

Police seized the electric dirt bike and will apply to the Local Court to have it forfeited to the Crown.

It's great to hear that TfNSW has secured $485,000 in funding to build a pedestrian refuge on Tongarra Rd, funded by a government initiative focused on improving safety at sites where fatalities have occurred (2022). The announcement was made on January 16, 2026, (see link) and work began soon after on January 27, though there was no prior consultation with SCC or the local community.

The lack of consultation is disappointing, especially since the planned location is west of the Bowling Club entrance, where the road is wider. Placing the refuge east of the Bowling Club entrance would have meant a narrower road and closer access to the pedestrian lane frequently used by students.
The current plan may not allow a Right-Hand turn into the Bowling Club but a driveway gap on the painted chevron could still be included.
Nevertheless, this refuge will be greatly valued by our community crossing the Illawarra Hwy near this area, particularly the students using the laneway connecting Jeffcoat St to the highway. Unlike a traditional pedestrian crossing, the refuge allows pedestrians to pause safely between lanes, making it easier and safer for them by focusing to cross one lane at a time.

Congratulations to Katelin McInerney on winning the Kiama by-election and becoming our electorate's first female MP.

We are all looking forward to watching her involvement with the Tripoli Way Project and anticipating the inclusion of the 2021 TfNSW Movement and Place Study for Albion Park Option 4. Shown below.

SCC, TfNSW and Private engineers (Cardno) all agree that Option 4 is needed for Triploi Way to be fully effective in reducing traffic through the CDB along the Illawarra Highway. Families attending our schools, churches and businesses, are at risk every day!

Katelin’s priority issues include:
• Delivering the Tripoli Way Bypass and upgrades to the Princes Highway, Nowra Bypass, and Moss Vale Road,
• Building a new primary school in Calderwood, and upgrading Bomaderry High School, Bomaderry Public School and Pre-School.
• Delivering the new Shellharbour and Shoalhaven Hospital Developments.

UPDATE:
Although Tripoli Way has been planned for decades, this was before the State Government approved the developments west of Albion Park as "State Significant", with reduced expenses, such as infrastructure, as incentives.

It was also before the recent Motorway was constructed to bypass Albion Park Rail. The ON-OFF ramps were NOT included in the original plans but were later included after community concerns!

With these major developments dropping on Albion Park, SCC has brought forward the Tripoli Way construction, with financial assistance from the State Government.

In the design process engineers from TfNSW, SCC and Cardno (contractor) all agreed that the 2021 TfNSW Motion and Place Study, Option 4, a "Loop Rd" from Tripoli Way to the ramps east of Albion Park was needed to greatly improve the efficiency of Tripoli Way.

It is believed that this will be a NSW Govt funded project and why it was not included in the SCC Tripoli Way construction.

Hopefully our new MP will realise the importance of "Option 4" and update our community on the planning progress, if any.
