But today's AI-powered tools and social media have made it easier and faster to create and spread disinformation. In this lecture, we’ll explore how AI is used to create convincing deepfakes and clone voices, making it challenging to distinguish between real and fake content. We’ll also review best practices for evaluating information and explore tech tools that can help identify content created with AI.

From July 2026, two new payments will be available via the ServiceWA app to support Western Australian households with cost-of-living pressures. The Fuel Support Payment and the WA Student Assistance Payment are one-off payments to help ease financial pressures.

The fastest and most convenient way to receive the Fuel Support Payment is through the ServiceWA app. Claims can be made from 1 July 2026 through the ServiceWA Offers tab.

The ServiceWA app will also be the fastest, most secure and most convenient way to claim the WA Student Assistance Payment.

Journal Launch

A Gift of Truth Telling: notes on the bicentenary of Albany is issue No. 38 of Studies in Western Australian History. Following on from Albany: an Antipodean Arcadia (2021), this journal features 18 articles by multiple authors, covering a range of Albany and regional historical topics. In line with the Albany 2026 theme, it is very much ‘Menang First’ in nature.

The co-editors, Harry Freemantle and Malcolm Traill, will introduce several of the authors who will speak briefly about their contributions.

The Targeting scams report highlights the cooperative work of the ACCC, other regulators and law enforcement agencies to disrupt scams and educate consumers.

The combined losses reported to Scamwatch in 2025 total almost 2.2 billion. This figure is up 7.8% from 2024, however, the number of scams reported is down 2.7% compared to last year.
