Happy 100th birthday Sir David Attenborough! It's simply not possible to sum up your many achievements in the space of a couple of sentences. But your contribution in educating and helping people to understand how wonderfully diverse and important our wildlife and natural environment are cannot be underestimated. Bravo!

Thank you to Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia for the detailed video update on the impact assessment of the recent bushfires in Cape Arid National Park. It showcases just how vast the landscape is that is under protection and how hard it is to monitor that landscape. Hats off to all the staff that put in the hard yards to help protect the Western Ground Parrot!

South Coast Natural Resource Management's roller coaster analogy is very apt, given that over the past couple of months we've had the fantastic news from Perth Zoo of progress with their western ground parrot captive breeding program, but then the devastating bushfires in key parrot habitat. If you'd like to know more about what SCNRM has been up to, their full Bunuru newsletter, available at the following link, is well worth a read.

The past few months have been a roller coaster journey for Kyloriny conservation. After more than a decade of effort, the South Coast Threatened Birds Recovery Team celebrated a world first successful hatching of a Kyloriny at Perth Zoo, offering real hope that captive breeding could play a role in the species’ future.

Sadly, this excitement was quickly tempered by a recent bushfire in Cape Arid National Park, the last remaining natural stronghold for the species. The fire is estimated to have impacted around 30 per cent of Kyloriny habitat. You can read more in this recent article 👉 https://shorturl.at/XQ5Gv

The fire highlights just how fragile the remaining Kyloriny population is and how important conservation efforts are. We are proud that our Threatened Fauna Project supports critical work in partnership with DBCA and other local conservation organisations, including feral cat trapping, introduced predator monitoring, and ongoing Kyloriny population monitoring in Cape Arid National Park. This work is now more important than ever.

Around the same time as the Cape Arid Fire, an even larger fire has burned through more than 140,000 hectares of the Fitzgerald River National Park, affecting habitat for many other threatened species across the South Coast Region.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our partners at DBCA, along with the hundreds of volunteers and organisations who worked tirelessly to battle the fires in the Cape Arid and Fitzgerald River National Parks. Your dedication and commitment to protecting these landscapes and the wildlife that depend on them does not go unnoticed. 🙏

The Threatened Fauna Project is guided by the South Coast Threatened Birds and Gilbert's Potoroo Recovery Teams and is delivered through a partnership between South Coast NRM, DBCA, the Gilbert’s Potoroo Action Group, Friends of the Western Ground Parrot, BirdLife Australia, and the Albany Bird Group. The project is funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust.
