As we all know, the threats to the Yakamia forest (a new development over here, a dual carriage road over there) are symptomatic of a much larger problem.

In this community forum, hosted by the Albany Community Environment Centre, two experts will share their perspectives, from urban planning to building design and planned Degrowth.

The forum will explore the question: "Is it possible to plan for Albany’s future growth so that the lessons learnt from the Yakamia experience are not repeated?"

We trust this event, to be held at the Albany Public Library on Wednesdy June 24th, will be of interest to many Friends of Yakamia.

Yakamia Forest is one of countless natural places in our once beautiful state under constant siege from the state government and the vested interests of big business, in the name of 'development' and 'progress'. Our solidarity with all community groups to our North fighting against the goliath which is Alcoa.

The Local Biodiversity Strategy went back to the editing suite by a unanimous vote of Council at our Committee meeting Tuesday night.

Two speakers during public statements raised concerns about it first. Councillors heard from Prof Stephen Hopper that the strategy lacked adequate consideration of Albany's granite outcrops, identified in a recent paper (he tabled) as globally recognised unique ecosystems which need to be prioritised for conservation.

Paul Wettin expressed a similar concern that wetlands and aquatic ecosystems, like Nenamup Inlet, were not treated in the same detail as terrestrial native vegetation.

Officers said the high level strategy is intended to protect biodiversity in all ecosystems.

Councillors voted to delay consideration until August to allow enough time to consider amendments to the strategy.

Our urban tree covered spaces are becoming ever more precious and ever more dwindling. Albany has less than 20% of its pre-colonial natural vegetation. It takes a lot of deliberation, logistics and money to replace what has been lost - far better sense not to clear what was there in the first place

Some country towns could lose up to 80 per cent of their shade due to aging trees, but replacing them is not simple for councils.
