While coping with some challenging weather on the weekend, 2 of our pilots completed another survey. While they are naturally leaving now and the numbers are down on the peak there were still 54 mother calf pairs in the survey from Point Anne to Albany.

The aerial surveys are going well this year. Southern Right numbers are the highest since we started which is extremely pleasing . Can’t believe we have nearly finished our 5 th season of aerial surveys! We’re looking for volunteers to help promote this important research. So if you’re passionate about Southern Right Whale conservation and have time to help in any way please send us a message.

Lloyd and myself flew Kimberley the researcher doing the Southern Right Whale survey today. Exciting thing is there were a great many SRW’s . We saw close to 50 adults, mostly mothers with calves in the Point Anne / Trigilow beach area . The numbers are looking like the highest year 2021 when we started the survey. Numbers are getting well up at Cheyenne’s as well, so we’re pretty happy about all that.

A big welcome to Danica who joined our whale pilots group today with her first Survey Flight . Pictured here with researcher Kimberley. Southern Right numbers are up early in the season which is encouraging. We saw the first Southern Right’s for this season at Cheyenne’s Beach on Saturday.

Once a hotspot for commercial whaling, a section of WA coast has become a sanctuary for newborn southern right whale calves. But the population is still struggling to recover.

We were really excited to see the first Southern Right Whale for the season which was a pregnant mother sighted near Point Anne yesterday !!!!
Thanks to Mick Moir for doing the first flight , taking Katy and our new researcher Kimberely up.
It was a bit earlier than expected, however they were this early in one other year. Normally I guess we would expect to see the first SRW around the end of the first week in June . We have all become very attached to the special and very much endagered SRWs that come all the way from the far reaches of the southern ocean to have their calves on our local coastline. So seeing the first mother arrive for the season is a special and somewhat emotional occasion !
We are all quietly proud that we are going into our 5th year doing the aerial surveys!! As we add more years to the data set, it becomes more meaningful and more important. Our data is already being used in national SRW conservation planning.
