𝐖𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬! 🎉

Our community can now access eight new animated health literacy videos to help you understand how healthcare works in Australia.

The videos are available in 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐨, 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢, 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐜 and cover important topics including:

🩺 GPs
📅 Healthcare appointments
🧪 Medical tests
💉 Vaccinations

Videos can be found here on our TMSG YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/-townsville

These videos are designed to make healthcare information easier to understand and are:
🎨 Visually adapted to reflect the communities they were created for
🤝 Co-designed with refugee communities
🗣️ Translated into languages spoken by our community

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚?

That was the question behind a health literacy project delivered by TMSG and funded by the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN).

Over three co-design workshops, members of the Sudanese, Central African Republic, Somali and Congolese communities shared their experiences of healthcare in Australia — what they found confusing, what they wished they had known when they first arrived, and what could have made things easier.
But the learning went both ways.

Community members also shared their experiences of healthcare in their countries of origin, helping Australian healthcare practitioners understand why our healthcare system can sometimes feel unfamiliar, confusing or difficult to trust for new arrivals.

Their experiences and ideas helped shape these new resources.
For the Sango-speaking community, this project also helps fill an important gap, with very few culturally and linguistically appropriate health resources available in Sango.

This wasn't just about teaching communities how Australian healthcare works. It was about healthcare practitioners learning from communities, too.
The videos were developed with input from the wider health sector to support clinical accuracy and best practice.

A special thank you to TMSG’s Rowena for facilitating/coordinating this exciting project and bringing it all together, and to Etienne, Moses, Yasmin and Gbeti for the many hours spent translating these incredible videos for our community.

Funded by Northern Queensland Primary Health Network and delivered by TMSG, building on the original work of Mater Refugee and Multicultural Health and Brisbane South PHN.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences, knowledge and ideas and helped bring these resources to life.

Healthcare information — made for community, by community. 🤝

🎓 Celebrating Success! 🎉

TMSG recently held a special Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) Graduation Ceremony to celebrate the achievements of 12 students who successfully completed their Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways.

Family, friends and TMSG’s employees came together to recognise this important milestone and celebrate the hard work, determination and achievements of our graduates. The celebration was made even more special with a wonderful Sudanese dance performance, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the families who shared this beautiful traditional dance with everyone.

Guests also enjoyed some delicious Thai food as part of the celebrations! 💃🍛
Although the training has now come to an end, our graduates' journeys are continuing. The TMSG team will continue to provide support as they explore employment and further education opportunities.

Congratulations to all our graduates! We are incredibly proud of what you have achieved and wish you every success in the next chapter of your journey. 🌟👏
