🪢 Essential Nautical Knots Every Mariner Should Master
Knot-tying is a fundamental skill for seafarers, sailors, and maritime professionals. The right knot can secure cargo, rig sails, moor vessels, or even save lives in critical situations. Here’s a curated collection of 15 essential knots every deckhand and officer should know:
Basic & Stopper Knot
• Overhand Knot
• Figure-Eight Knot (excellent stopper)
• Granny Knot (avoid for critical use)
Joining & Binding Knots
• Square Knot (reef knot)
• Sheet Bend & Double Sheet Bend
• Fisherman’s Knot
• Common Whipping Hitches
• Cow Hitch
• Clove Hitch
• Heaving Line Knot
Special Purpose Knots
• Bowline (the “King of Knots” – creates a secure loop)
• Running Bowline
• Bowline on a Bight
• Sheepshank (shortens rope)
Mastering these knots improves safety, efficiency, and confidence on board. Regular practice during drills is highly recommended by SOLAS and maritime training standards.
Whether you’re a cadet, AB, bosun, or sailing enthusiast — strong knot skills are timeless.

Today, we remember.

Those who served.
Those who sacrificed.
And those who never made it home.

On the water, we rely on each other,
in tough conditions, in the dark, when it matters most.
That same spirit of mateship and courage is what the ANZACs stood for.

We carry it with us every time we launch.

Lest we forget.

Ever wondered what our Marine Safety Officers look for when they’re out on the water or at boat ramps?

If you see our team around, here’s what they’ll be checking to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time out on the water:

🛥️ Safety gear: Make sure you have the right equipment for your vessel and destination, and that it’s in good working order. You can check what you need for your vessel using the online safety equipment tool on our website.
🛟 Lifejackets: Every vessel must carry lifejackets. Children aged 12 and under must always wear a lifejacket when in open areas of a boat up to 12m.
📜 Boat licence: If you’re operating a powered vessel, you must hold a current boat operator’s licence.
📍 Vessel registration: Make sure your boat is properly registered.

Our officers are there to help you stay safe and they’re always happy to answer your boating safety questions. 👋

Police said the boat was due back around lunchtime on Tuesday but failed to return.

With the hot weather upon us, please remember to stop and think about how we can all stay safer around water.

Always know the conditions and look out for changing river flows and hidden hazards. This summer, make sure your day starts and ends safely.

Take a moment to think about where you’re going, who’s with you, and how you’ll stay safe around water – and always call Triple Zero (000) in a medical emergency.
