Continuing The Tennyson Coastal Pathway

Continuing The Tennyson Coastal Pathway The much touted 70 Km Continuous Coastal Pathway currently has no hope of evolving. Stage 2, from Grange to Tennyson, was supposed to begin early in 2024.

There is no current plan to link the existing Stage 1 ( Semaphore Park ) to the yet to be started Stage 2 ( Tennyson) The Warra Wayingga Dune is inaccessible to Stage 2. As a longstanding resident of Tennyson and a keen walker, cyclist, fisherman, swimmer, lifesaver, sailor, skier, golfer, and now bowler within the area, I have met many who also enjoy the coastline and the recreational opportuniti

es it provides. With the introduction of electrically assisted mobility devices providing a wider age span of self-mobility users, there is now a greater need for facilities that encourage healthy lifestyle choices and reduce the reliance on motor transport for most short trips, such as for shopping and visiting. Over the years, there has been much improvement to the coastal infrastructure all along the metropolitan area, with one glaring exception at Tennyson. We are blessed with great pathways from Outer Harbour to the north to Kingston Park to the south. The recently completed Stage 1 from Semaphore to Semaphore Park cost ratepayers a tremendous amount after a judgment favourable to the NIMBYs caused it to eventually be handed over to the Department of Transport and Infrastructure, who finally got the job done. To date, not a single w**d has been harmed or rock overturned. Nevertheless, there is a plan. What is not planned is the continuity from Stage 1 to Stage 2, enabling 70 km of metropolitan coastline to be accessed for recreational activities. Remember the election promise by the Member for Lee, the Honourable Minister Steven Mulligan, who said, I will build the 70 km Coastal Pathway if elected. I have had much correspondence, as have many of you, trying to persuade the various leaders to the cause. The DIT have responsibility for Stage 1 and 2. The Department for Environment and Water has responsibility for the unplanned area in between at Warra Wayinga. The statement from the Minister is that there is no funding available. The Federal Government has offered to participate in funding up to $5 million on projects that improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians, so there really is plenty of opportunity to get the job done if there is enough awareness and channelling of resources. Hence my commitment to establish this public forum page online. Any comments and or contributions are welcomed, and of course, please share and spread the word. With people power, local, state, and federal government cooperation, there is every chance of a successful outcome. People Power Passion.

Maybe we need to go to the top!

Investing in cycling means investing in healthier people and more connected, liveable communities.

Indi welcomes thousands of visitors each year who take to two wheels to explore the trails traversing our wine regions, mountains and plains – supporting local tourism and regional economies along the way.

I'm proud to co-chair the Parliamentary Friends of Cycling group - ensuring those benefits remain front of mind in national decision-making and are translated into real investment, such as the $500 million Active Transport Fund announced in the federal Budget.

It will invest $90.2 million in its first year to deliver infrastructure like safe pathways for kids to ride to school, across the country – a significant step forward.

In 2024 I received a reply from the former minister Susan Close after I alerted the S.A. Government about the lack of access to Warra Wayinnga Park from Bournemouth Street /Sea View Road and maintenance to the southern area of the Warra Wayinnga Park.
Below is an excerpt of the reply.

" The Department for Environment and Water (DEW) has advised that it will be
undertaking maintenance of the trail that traverses the reserve and links with Coast
Park at either end, throughout 2024. These works will include vegetation trimming,
refurbishment of bollards, the updating of interpretive signage and any other required
track maintenance. These works will maintain the distinctive character of the reserve
while maintaining linkages to the Coast Park on either side."

I have been actively observing the area since this email was recieved and noted some work was performed on improvement of the existing paths that had prior maintenance performed. This led to suspicions of a work order ban existed.
Further conversation with elderly locals added gravity to this theory. No work of any kind whatsoever was observed to be performed adjacent the Tennyson Heights properties.
No "maintenance of the trail that traverses the reserve and links with Coast Park at either end" occurred because back then as is now there is no " Trail that Traverses the park at either end"

To date over 2 years after this email was received, still to this day, the Tennyson Heights GOAT TRACK has not been touched by any City of Charles Sturt or Dept. Environment & Water worker.

Now if that is not a CONTROL ORDER by a higher authority, tell me, and all the other members of the public who want to access this important coastal area, what is the real reasons why such a decrepit path can occur between Grange and Semaphore, and when will we have a " Trail that traverses the Reserve and links with Coast Park at either end".
We have waited far too long. Now with Federal Funding Availible it is time for the relavant ministers to DO THEIR JOB.

If it is the case in 2026, that one individual has so much power as to exclude the rest off the community from a valuable coastal eco park, that is public land, it has to STOP and STOP NOW.

This is an another example of Tennyson being neglected. Or is Tennyson not available for people who have vibrant active lifestyles. Well I live in Tennyson and have for 4 decades. In this time I have been waiting for it to be incorporated in the metropolitan coastal community. Here we have the City of Charles Sturt incorporating some coastal communities activities and right in the middle Tennyson gets overlooked. Because we have a GOAT TRACK right in the middle. No work has been performed on the transversal track because of some sort of higher authority wanting to keep it devoid of vibrancy, activity or any form of life. I am so over being excluded access to the Warra Wayinnga Park unless I go around the south excluded area via the soft sand or even via Military Road to Tennyson Heights, then around the island of homes in the centre ( take note there are no footpaths) eventually you will get to the swale path that transverses the park from that point. Why it is not accessible from Bournemouth Street is exemplary of the control by higher authority to keep Tennyson in the previous millennium. It is well overdue for Tennyson to be part of the coastal community as opposed to an island of exclusivity for the fortunate.

Between now and 2028 there are funds at $4 500000 available for the upgrade and construction of new bicycle and walking paths in South Australian Communities. What in South Australia has the most need for this funding.

THE TENNYSON GOAT TRACK

A very small amount of that funding could provide transversal access for all through Warra Wayinnga and create a connection between the current Stage 1 to the long awaited Stage 2. Now it’s time for our MPs to get their acts together for the sake of the state of the South Australia people and make something happen that will make the metropolitan coastline available to all. Locals, and visitors alike.

We have the need
We have the passion
We have the funding
We need the jobs
We need a Continuous Coastal Pathway

To all of us who have the same dream to one day have a morning cuppa at Grange or Henley Beach then walk, run or roll along our spectacular coastline, through the last of the wild dunes, past the Semaphore Surf Lifesavers then onto the Semaphore Coastline Railway to Jetty Street Semaphore or Largs for lunch. Well you probably have signed the petition which has reached a milestone.

Hi Folks and many thanks for your support in this well deserved and well overdue campaign. Take note. I have never asked for any payment. I do not seek any payment. The request for donations is purely independent of the campaign and is from the .org entity. I received information that a supporter had an issue making a payment and as such alerted me. Hence this message. Support of this Campaign is free. It is to lobby for better recreational options in an area where open space is diminishing.

Bicycle Network welcomes the announcement of an ongoing fund for active transport in this year's federal budget.

Local and state governments will be able to access the $50 million a year fund to support much-needed active transport projects, which should be a priority as people seek to cope with the cost of living crisis and climate stress.

We look forward to seeing more cycling infrastructure in communities across the country and urge state and local governments to follow the federal government in making active transport a priority.
