Sustainable Population Australia - SA & NT Branch This is the page of the South Australia and Northern Territory branch of Sustainable Population Australia (SPA).

Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) (formerly Australians for an Ecologically Sustainable Population) is an Australian special advocacy group, founded in Canberra in 1988, that seeks to establish an ecologically sustainable human population. SPA an ecological group dedicated to preserving species' habitats globally and in Australia from the degradation caused by human population growth. It work

s on many fronts to encourage informed public debate about how Australia and the world can achieve an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable population. SPA's local activities are run by its 6 state brances: ACT, NSW, SA & NT, Vic & Tas, Qld and WA. Some branches hold regular meetings but the main link between members is the Newsletter, produced four times a year. This provides members with information and expert opinion to rebut the many myths about sustainability and population that one hears in conversation or sees in the press.

Here's a graph showing Albanese's promise to "reduce" net overseas migration to 225,000 people per year, in 2 years time, is still the highest immigration rate on record.
He says he's listened to people turning to One Nation over the too high immigration rate, but he hasn't really. He's planning on bringing in 1 million more people in the next 4 years, I keep asking where will they all live and how many more Australians will be made homeless but nobody can tell me - Admin Robyn

Still far too many people insist our high immigration rate is fine.
Eight million new people in 25 years! This is the unsurprising result.
"Local councils are struggling to cope with a homelessness crisis that has spread well beyond inner-city streets.
"Two-thirds of Australian councils consider homelessness a significant or acute issue in their communities, up from about 10 per cent in the 2010s."

Two in three Australian councils now see homelessness as a major issue in their communities, as the housing crisis spreads into the suburbs and regions.

Happy 100th birthday Sir David Attenborough - who had a lot to say about population growth in Australia.
"Sir David Attenborough has strongly cautioned Australia against pursuing high population growth, describing the notion of "infinite" expansion on a finite planet as "lunacy" and a "kind of madness". He argues that unchecked population growth is the primary driver of environmental degradation, challenging Australia's approach to expansion.
Key Perspectives on Australia's Population:
"Madness" of Growth: Attenborough has questioned why Australia continues to debate the need for population growth. He advocates for limiting population expansion to avoid destroying ecosystems.
Impact on Biodiversity: He emphasizes that the sheer number of people in Australia is creating immense pressure on natural habitats, increasing the threat to countless species.
Sustainability Limitations: In a 2011 "People and Planet" speech, he highlighted that the world cannot sustain exponential population growth.
Global Context: While acknowledging that Australia is often seen as "big and empty," he has suggested that even such countries have limits to their sustainability.
Attenborough has urged for a change in perspective on population issues, focusing on environmental sustainability and reducing humanity's overall footprint.
His 2013 remarks, which are detailed in a Sydney Morning Herald article, highlight that the issues regarding environmental degradation are fundamentally connected to the number of people and their consumption patterns.
Further details can be found in a 2011 YouTube video of his speech and a 2021 article about his views.

Media Release: "Tony Burke’s push to convert up to 3 million temporary visa holders to permanent resident status undermines ecological limits, liveability, and quality of life for all Australians"

Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) expresses grave concern over comments by Immigration Minister Tony Burke in an Indian Link Media podcast, advocated for a pathway to full permanent residency and citizenship pathway for people who “are still here” and “working here”. SPA maintains: Immi...

An interesting article in The Conversation looked into the patterns of social exclusion in Australia. Migrants seem to be doing the best of all on this measure, while the unemployed, public housing tenants and those on welfare are doing the worst.

The government needs to change its priorities away from obsessing about migrant welfare, towards those who are really in need in this country. And reducing the level of immigration would help to release pressure on the resources needed to do this.

We get told there are skills shortages for jobs such as nursing, then we see reports such as this!

Governments haven’t been willing to invest in taking on graduates, to enable them to get the experience they need to be attractive employees. So then there is a shortage of experienced workers, who we are told we have to import from overseas.

We are exploiting other countries’ investment in their workforce, to prop up an economy which has become lazy and fragile.

After being lured into the profession by a state government initiative, graduate nurses and midwives are now being forced to move interstate or work in cafes.
