Welcome to the club Bandito!

After almost 7 years of dedicated service, countless deployments and one incredible comeback story, it's time for PD Bandit to trade in operational life for retirement.

Graduating as a police dog in October 2019, Bandit went on to build an outstanding operational career, deploying on 958 occasions and locating a total of 178 suspects and persons.

In July 2022 Bandit faced a life-threatening medical emergency requiring urgent surgery, after ingesting a grass seed that caused a severe infection.

Following an extensive period of recovery and rehabilitation, Bandit made an incredible return to active duty in early 2023.

In recognition of his exemplary service, he was awarded the Outstanding Canine Service Award by the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia in 2024.

Bandit also sired a number of pups throughout his SAPOL journey and 7 have gone on to become operational police dogs, displaying his high-quality genetic traits.

Bandit now retires into the loving care of one of his previous handlers, where he will enjoy a much slower lifestyle while leaving behind big paw prints in our hearts.

Thank you for your service PD Bandit! šŸ¾šŸ’™

At Retired Police Dogs SA, we are committed to ensuring our retired police dogs receive the best care possible. That’s why we only use veterinary service providers who meet our strict standards.

You might recall that some time ago, retired police dog Pluto underwent a significant surgical procedure at Reynella Veterinary Clinic. We’re delighted to share that Pluto made a full recovery and is thriving! He recently visited the clinic for his annual vaccinations and wellness check.

In an incredibly generous gesture, Reynella Veterinary Clinic covered the costs of Pluto’s recent visit. Acts of kindness like this make a real difference, allowing us to use donations for urgent emergency procedures and ongoing care.

We sincerely thank Reynella Veterinary Clinic for their continued support of our retired heroes.

Many of you will remember retired police dog Rusty, a loyal worker who gave his all on the job and now faces the quieter challenges of retirement 🐾

These days, Rusty undergoes regular physio to keep him comfortable and mobile. Like many ageing working dogs, the colder months can be tough on his joints, and a good rest isn’t just a luxury, it’s essential.

We recently had the privilege of helping Rusty out by providing a specialised orthopaedic bed, giving him a warm and supportive place to rest after his treatments… and it’s safe to say he’s made himself very comfortable — it’s obvious he loves it.

This wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of the team at Gobles Pet, Grain & Garden. Not only did they help us find the perfect bed for Rusty, they also generously assisted with the cost — support that allows us to continue helping other dogs who’ve served and still need care.

If you’re looking for quality pet supplies and genuine, knowledgeable advice, we highly recommend dropping into Gobles at 242 Richmond Road, Marleston. Their support for the community and dogs like Rusty, speaks volumes.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Retired Police Dog Georgie.

Georgie served with distinction as a highly effective drug detection dog for many years, playing an important role in keeping our community safe. Her dedication, intelligence, and drive made her an invaluable member of the team, and her work left a lasting impact.

In her retirement, Georgie was welcomed into the loving care of a family member of her handler, where she spent her days surrounded by comfort, affection, and the joys of family life. She continued to bring happiness wherever she went, becoming a familiar and much-loved presence at RPDSA events, helping us raise awareness and support for our cause.

Her family described her beautifully as ā€œa beautiful and special girl, she was the best big sister in her retirement and friend to all at the beach and the dog park.ā€ A fitting tribute to a dog who gave so much in every chapter of her life.

Our thoughts are with her family and her handler during this difficult time. We extend our deepest gratitude to her family for the exceptional care they gave Georgie in her retirement, and for their continued support of RPDSA.

Georgie will be deeply missed by all who knew her, worked with her, and loved her. Her legacy of service, love, and loyalty will not be forgotten. šŸ’™

What a fantastic weekend at the Gepps Cross Police Complex — home of South Australia Police’s Dog Operations Unit! 🐾

We were blown away by the number of people who came through to show their support for our incredible police dogs, both past and present. It was a great opportunity for the community to connect with the unit, learn more about the work these highly trained dogs do, and meet some of the personalities behind the job.

Retired Police Dogs Chaos and Arnie were front and centre, doing what they do best — soaking up the attention and welcoming visitors with plenty of tail wags. They were proudly joined by some of our current service police dogs, giving everyone a glimpse into the capability, discipline, and bond that makes these teams so special.

A sincere thank you to everyone who took the time to come along, have a chat, and support Retired Police Dogs SA. Your purchases and donations make a real and lasting impact. Every dollar raised goes directly towards supporting our retired police dogs, ensuring they receive the care, comfort, and quality of life they deserve after their years of dedicated service.

We’re incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from our community, it truly makes a difference.

Thank you for backing our retired heroes šŸ’™šŸ¶

2026 has already proven to be a busy and demanding year for Retired Police Dogs SA.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we have contributed over $10,000 toward the medical care of South Australia’s retired police dogs — dogs who have served our community with loyalty, courage, and dedication.

These contributions have gone directly toward essential treatments and procedures, including an airway obstruction, physiotherapy and laser treatment, ear infections, vaccinations, Cartrophen injections, pain medications, and ongoing wellbeing care.

Behind every one of these treatments is a retired service dog now receiving the care they deserve in their later years.

The need continues, and so does our commitment.

If you have ever considered donating, now would be a meaningful time to do so. There are several ways to contribute, all available via our website:

Your support ensures these dogs are not forgotten once their service ends.

🐾 RPD Harriet: Queen of the Cone! 🐾

Our retired police dog Harriet recently had surgery at Southcoast Animal Hospital for a growth on her eye and neck. She’s rocking the cone like a champ—and proving that even heroes need a little TLC sometimes! šŸ˜ŽšŸ’›

Her family said it best:

"We feel so lucky and grateful for the support of the association—and for everyone who helps retired police dogs enjoy a happy, healthy retirement."

Since January, we’ve seen a huge increase in requests for vet assistance. Surgeries, check-ups, and treatments for our retired heroes cost money, and your donations make it possible for dogs like Harriet to receive the care they need.

Every contribution helps—whether it’s a one-off gift or a regular donation. You can make a real difference to the lives of these incredible dogs.

Let’s keep tails wagging and heroes happy in their retirement! šŸ¶šŸ’™
