But while writing her latest book, ๐๐ข๐ท๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐บ, she discovered a connection far closer to home than expected.
Tracing her pioneer ancestorsโ journeys from Europe to Australasia, Samantha unearthed an unexpected family link to our City. ๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ต๐ฎโ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ-๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐ ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐-๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ, ๐ช๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ฎ๐บ, ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐ฆ๐๐๐ฟ๐โ๐ ๐ด๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ at the Reedbeds, an area that now encompasses parts of the western suburbs, during the 1840s.
โI found quite a lot that I was surprised about, because those stories haven't been passed down to me,โ Samantha said.
Drawing on sources including Trove, obituaries, newspaper reports and war journals, ๐๐ข๐ท๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐บ explores migration, secrecy and the impacts of colonisation on First Nations people and settlers, through the stories of Samatha's own ancestors.
โI found that while William worked as Charles Sturtโs gardener, his wife took in washing and ironing to support the household. They saved up to buy a bullock dray after which he and his eldest son transported food and provisions to the Burra mines, at a time when there was tension between local settlers and Ngadjuri people.โ
A public health academic and policy expert, as well as an amateur visual artist - Samantha's latest book blends personal discovery with broader social history.
She grew up in West Croydon and attended Kilkenny Primary School, and says she draws some of her creative inspiration from walks along nearby beaches with her Border Collie, Louie.
โFamily histories often leave women out of the story,โ Samantha said, noting that she aims to bring those voices forward despite gaps in the historical record.
As part of South Australiaโs History Festival, Dr Samantha Battams will discuss ๐๐ข๐ท๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐บ in a sold-out conversation with Dr Lainie Anderson at Ngutungka Henley this week.
For those who missed out on tickets, several of her works are available through our Charles Sturt Libraries OneCard Network.
