National Reconciliation Week is underway and The Wyatt Trust and friends from Allegria, Foundation SA and Inparrila were proud to lend our voices as one of 700 choirs across Australia that took part in Voices for Reconciliation by performing ‘Beds are Burning’ by Midnight Oil.

For some of the pitch-imperfect members of our team, it was a reminder of this year’s NRW theme, ‘All in’, which means getting uncomfortable sometimes. Truth-telling isn’t comfortable work, nor should it be.

As an organisation we are all in for reconciliation.

We were grateful to take part in today’s Reconciliation South Australia NRW Breakfast and were inspired by Eddie Betts, Casey Donovan, and Nathan May. Congratulations to the Reconciliation SA team for another thought-provoking event.

Deeply connected to culture, with a focus on respecting traditional knowledge and practices related to sustainable Kuti (p**i) harvesting, Kuti Morokun is using a $300,000 investment from The Wyatt Trust’s Catalytic Local Investment Fund (CLIF), to invest in the equipment and intellectual property that will see the business transition to being fully employee owned.

“Our absolute focus is community development including training and jobs for our Mob,” says Ngarindjerri Elder, Uncle Derek Walker.

“Our goal is to not only have our young people working in the business but come to be part of the ownership too.”

The five-year loan comes with a five per cent interest rate and a six-month interest-free period.

“This was a unique opportunity to invest in a South Australian First Nations business doing good for both people and planet,”

“The CLIF investment will help catalyse economic empowerment, career opportunities and build generational wealth for Ngarrindjeri people," explains Wyatt’s Investment Specialist, Gavin Reid.

"The work of Kuti Morokon protects the coastal environment through sustainable production, provides opportunities to share cultural knowledge, as well as generating revenue that will be reinvested back into the community.”

At Wyatt, we value and embed the voices of Lived and Living Experience across our work.

We did not want to lose sight of their voices in our latest report, Perspectives on Investing, so with the help of the Economic Media Centre, several South Australians shared their thoughts and experience of poverty in a profit-driven economic system for the report.

“Having an impact and generating returns are not mutually exclusive,” explains Nick Costello, CFA, Chair of The Wyatt Trust’s Investment Committee.

In the new report, Perspectives on Investment, Nick shares his reflections on the journey that saw Wyatt transition from being a “fairly traditional Australian investor” to one that intentionally invests for impact.

“I see the role of philanthropy as being to take risk in areas that are consistent with the mission of the organisation," Nick says. "I see it as part of our responsibility as a large endowment, to be stepping in and taking those risks. It’s been really pleasing to see the willingness of the organisation to consider the corpus as a key pillar of the impact that we can have, not just the distributions that we can make from it.”

Our new report Perspectives on Investing details the work of The Wyatt Trust to grow our impact through investing.

The report is the distillation of our experiences over the last 10+ years to deploy capital in a way that might create positive outcomes beyond financial gains. We’ve learned from, and been inspired by, many specialists and great minds in the field, some of whom are featured in this report.

The first part of Perspectives on Investing focuses on internal processes to review and recalibrate Wyatt’s portfolio; the closing pages detail some of the more sophisticated outputs from this process, including the Catalytic Local Investment Fund, along with what we’re still grappling with and what we’ve learned.

We hope that by sharing our experiences, other funders and organisations that have the capacity to explore these pathways might also consider what more they can do to extend their impact.

As part of Wyatt's forthcoming Perspectives on Investing report, political economist, researcher and author, Katherine Trebeck recently shared her thoughts with us about the key tenets of the wellbeing economy and the change that’s already underway.

“While it’s hard to sum up the wellbeing economy in a simple phrase, it's essentially an economy that works for people and planet rather than the other way around,” Dr Trebeck says.

“It entails looking upstream of so many of the challenges facing the world today and identifying their economic root causes and taking action to change the way the economy operates so that it is designed to deliver social and environmental outcomes.

“Change is here. It's happening. The question is who is driving it, with what agenda, and to what degree justice and cherishing the planet are guiding goals.”

The Perspectives on Investing report, (available early April), shares the ‘Why and How’ with the ‘Who and What’ of Wyatt's investing for impact journey. To request a copy, drop us a line at [email protected] or sign up to receive our quarterly newsletter via the footer of our website: wyatt.org.au

"There's a real gap, a huge gap, in areas where women need help, domestic violence, financial, all the grief and trauma and everything. The Linker Service fills in the gaps. It just means the world to me – it’s helped me so much. I just feel like I've really blossomed like a flower. I'm just amazed at how many things are happening in my life, and I appreciate it.” - RS, Linker Service client

This International Women's Day we're celebrating the hundreds of inspiring women, many with lived and living experience of poverty, that we're grateful to see supported through this work.

Read more of their stories in our latest Linker Service case study that features three Linker clients and their Linker Deval Shah at UnitingCare Wesley Bowden (UCWB).

“We’re not a spur of the moment foundation, we’re an Indigenous-led philanthropic foundation that plans to be here for a long time," says Wirangu and Kokatha man, Warren Miller, Spinifex Foundation SA’s CEO.

"Aboriginal communities are tired of pilot programs. We want to stick around and be a philanthropic leader for positive change using the wisdom that we have in our communities and culture, and as a foundation we’ll continue to evolve and adapt to meet those needs.”

In a recent conversation, Warren shared his thoughts on the ways philanthropy can “step outside its comfort zone” and do more to walk beside First Nations communities.
