We saw a post earlier this morning on Red Box Wildlife Shelter sharing this free version of Kangaroo: A Love-Hate Story. Now that the NSW Inquiry into Licenses to Harm has released their report, the industries that profit from killing our wildlife are out complaining on social media.

Those who advocate for wildlife do not get funding to run a propaganda machine like the industry does. So it's on groups like ours, like Red Box, and villagers like you all to get the truth out onto the inter webs!

🚨 Meissner Road, near Meadows, South Australia

Overnight Wednesday 22 July into the early hours of Thursday 23 July, a vehicle chased a group of kangaroos on Meissner Road, ran them down, then turned around and came back to run them over again.

Make no mistake. This was a deliberate act of animal cruelty.

Two adult kangaroos, one sub adult and one in pouch joey were killed. Another joey was found alive in the pouch and is now in care with an experienced wildlife carer.

If you have a trail camera, dashcam or security camera on Meissner Road, Razorback Road or any road in the vicinity, please check your footage from that night. Even a vehicle passing at the wrong hour is worth reporting.

🦘 What is The Kangaroo Sanctuary Project?

The Kangaroo Sanctuary Project (TKSP) is an initiative of Adelaide Hills Kangaroo Rescue. Despite the name, TKSP is not a sanctuary itself. It exists to support the sanctuaries and rescuers in South Australia. It was born out of a simple, ongoing need.

In South Australia, a hand-raised joey cannot be released back to the wild. That is the law, and there is nowhere safe to release them to anyway. We are glad of that law. Most rescuers and sanctuaries have no wish to release a kangaroo into an environment where it will just be shot for petfood. So when a rescuer or carer raises an orphaned joey, that joey needs somewhere safe to live out their life. That somewhere is a volunteer owned sanctuary.

South Australia's volunteer run and owned sanctuaries are nothing like Gorge Wildlife Park or Cleland. No one is profiting from caring for these animals. There's no gate fee paying the bills.

On top of that, sanctuaries are constantly overlooked for funding despite the high cost of setting up infrastructure and the ongoing costs. Because they aren't strictly labelled "conservation," they miss out on funding again and again. The money flows to projects that tick the right box. The sanctuaries caring for living, breathing sentient beings get no government funding.

Where TKSP differs from some of the larger, better funded organisations in SA is that we won't trade in the life of a joey. We would rather put the work in to support sanctuaries.

Another way we differ is we don't care what organisation a rescuer or a sanctuary is with. We're not interested in territory. Our priority is the kangaroos, the people who rescue them, and the people who provide sanctuary for them. That's it.

We want to support the rescuers too. Rescuers and sanctuaries are both vital. Together they soften some of the damage being done to kangaroos.

Our vision for where TKSP can go? We look at organisations like The Rescue Collective in Queensland, Warriors 4 Wildlife in Victoria and Wildlife Allies Ltd in Western Australia, and the important work they are doing for wildlife sectors in their states. That is what we are working towards. A future where the rescuers and sanctuaries here in South Australia are properly backed, instead of carrying the whole load on their own.

AHKR is not a sanctuary. We are a rescue. The Kangaroo Sanctuary Project is one way we work to support the sanctuaries and rescuers.

South Australia now has its first confirmed case of avian influenza (H5N1), and rescuers know wider spread is likely a matter of when, not if. The problem is that South Australia does not have adequate wildlife quarantine facilities to manage an avian flu emergency. Without quarantine facilities other patients, carers and veterinary access are at risk. This is not one group's problem. It affects the whole wildlife rescue sector.

"South Australia now has a confirmed case of Avian Influenza (H5N1), alarmingly close to SKER's Wildlife Veterinary Centre .

This beautiful Pacific Gull is one of the many marine birds our veterinary team has helped. After becoming severely entangled in fishing line, it received urgent veterinary assessment and care before being safely released back into the wild.

Unfortunately, with the arrival of H5N1 in South Australia, the way we care for birds must change immediately.

As South Australia's only dedicated wildlife veterinary centre, we need to ensure we can continue providing life-saving veterinary care while also protecting our team, volunteers and the hundreds of native animals that come through our centre each year.

The biggest challenge we face right now is that we cannot safely manage potential avian influenza cases from our existing vet centre alone.

WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP

We are urgently seeking access to an unused transportable building, site office, portable classroom, granny flat, demountable or similar structure that could be loaned to SKER as a temporary measure while we work towards securing funding for a purpose-built wildlife triage facility.
Having a separate building would allow us to establish a dedicated screening and assessment area for high-risk bird admissions , helping protect our existing patients and ensuring we can continue responding to wildlife emergencies across South Australia.

Before you make a joke about bird flu, please read this.

Bird flu (H5N1) has been confirmed on the Australian mainland for the first time. Two migratory seabirds, a brown skua and a giant petrel, found near Esperance in southern Western Australia, have tested positive.

For anyone who has been following along, none of this is shocking. Scientists have tracked this virus for years and watched the different ways it could reach us. The northern flyway, with migratory birds arriving in spring, was one route they expected. Southern WA, by way of Southern Ocean seabirds, was another. This is not a surprise. And it is not some government planned gotcha moment or a distraction from the budget. It is a virus doing what scientists predicted it would do, arriving where they predicted it could arrive.

For wildlife rescuers, carers and conservationists, this is a frightening time. We don't know how far this will go, or what it will do to our native birdlife and other native species. We are not starting from a position of strength. One in six Australian bird species is already facing the threat of extinction. A virus like this could push some of them over.

We have already seen what it is capable of. On Heard Island, scientists estimate H5 bird flu killed around 13,000 southern elephant seal pups out of a population of roughly 17,000 in a single season. That is more than three quarters of the pups, and as high as 97 percent in one area. Researchers say even that may be an undercount, because the pups were still dying when their surveys ended. Nobody can yet say which of our species will be hit, or how hard.

So before you fire off another uneducated comment, stop. The people who care for these animals are watching a threat they cannot control move toward the wildlife they have given their lives to protecting. They do not need insipid jokes layered on top of that fear.

Meet little Angelo. He is one of 54 joeys Hills Wildlife Rescue and Rehab rescued and found sanctuary homes for in 2025. 🦘🦘🦘

Fifty four. And all of it with no government funding. Not a cent.

It's not just kangaroo joeys either. Birds, possums, koalas. If an animal needs help, they show up.

They look after the humans of rescue too. They organise get togethers so wildlife rescuers and carers can be in the same room. They source beautiful handmade pouches, possum beds and artificial bird nests, and they hand them out to carers for free!

People like this are the backbone of wildlife rescue in South Australia. The ones who will spend their last cent to help an animal, and then turn around and help another carer on top of it.

When you donate to wildlife rescue, it's worth a quick look at where your money actually goes. Who is doing the hands on work, and who is leaving the heavy lifting to small grassroots groups and independent carers and rescuers.

Mulligans Flat Woodland "Sanctuary" is surrounded by predator-proof fencing. But it couldn't keep out every predator - because on Thursday night, government-contracted shooters killed kangaroos inside it.

Save Canberra's Kangaroos were there, documenting what most people never see. Kangaroos, inside a fenced reserve, with nowhere to run, shot in an enclosure they can't escape.

We're told this is "conservation." But strip away the label and ask honestly how is it different from canned hunting?
