Alongside our love of kangaroos, we also love and advocate for wombats.
Wombats are very much maligned and commonly killed under SA government issued destruction permits, permits that are meant to require nonālethal options first, but in practice this doesn't usually happen. Theyāre also regularly killed when burrows are destroyed, sometimes illegally, leaving them buried alive.
A wombatās safe place is their burrow. When threatened, they run in and stay there. They canāt just dig out, as they try to dig out they push dirt behind, sealing themselves off from air.
Once youāve heard a wombat scratching to get out, you never forget it. š¤

As our long term followers would know, I've been advocating for wild wombats for a very long time...21 years.
I'm not getting anywhere.
I stopped posting about the reports we get because I had so many of you tell me you wish you hadn't seen my post, that you can't sleep and are traumatised.
I care and that is the last thing that I ever want to do.
I also had nothing to give you when you asked how to help.
The government gives stock standard replies that try to make you feel ok, the media twists the subject to me being a crazy person.
I've had every threat you can imagine including to my life and the lives of my sweethearts in care.
None of this matters because the reality is, these darlings are still being buried alive.
The laws need to be changed, no doubt but the government has less than zero interest. If I could get compelling footage of wombats running for their lives, that would change in an instant. Instead, they quietly hide underground suffering the unimaginable.
I do think it would help to put public pressure directly on the people/ company's actually doing this.
Just this week, I received a call about the council destroying wombat burrows.
I caught them out lying and I know there are wombats that have been buried alive.
The crazy thing is, there are legal ramifications for me to intervene, not against the people who are actually breaking the law. It is illegal to bury wombats alive however, it's almost impossible to prove it as the government accepts 'duty of care' which can be as simple and ridiculous as saying they thought the burrows were inactive, or they didn't see a wombat there š¤·āāļø
I know of a lot of businesses that regularly do the wrong thing and despite my filming/confronting and providing the best evidence I can, absolutely nothing happens when I report to authorities.
I have exhausted all options. The laws have not improved and there are too many easy loopholes.
I had a thought the other day about showing you evidence then asking for your help to leave reviews on these business pages/google?
May not seem like much but it would expose what the businesses are doing. No one wants hundreds or thousands of bad reviews.
Even if they delete them, the rating stays the same.
I'm unsure about the ramifications towards this page right here. This is the wombats lifeline and I can't risk that.
Before the keyboard warriors bring on their 'you aren't doing enough' I need to remind you that I have 182 wombats in care and have not had more than 4 hours sleep at a time in decades. I'm extremely time poor but my heart and courage are with these babies, always!
