Email: [email protected] In late 2009, Council resolved to investigate the feasibility of a new community garden for the City of Tea Tree Gully, in light of the popularity of Wynn Vale Community Garden set up in the mid-1990s. A location was subsequently selected,

start-up funding approved by Council and, in early 2012, a new community garden began to unfold at Lyons Reserve, Dernancourt. A volunteer Management Committee meet regularly to discuss garden design, infrastructure, and administrative matters. It is envisaged that the garden will be a place of learning, socialising and friendships across demographics, ages and abilities for many years to come. Residents of TTG are welcome to register their interest to participate, ask questions and share their ideas with the Management Committee. Please contact us at: [email protected]

Keep an eye out for rodents in your garden at the moment. If you use baits, first generation rodent bait is wildlife friendly to avoid secondary poisoning of predators such as owls.

Chinese pink celery is one of those garden harvests that’s almost too pretty to cook. Its blush-pink outer stems and pale centre make it as striking on the chopping board as it is in the garden.

It’s a bit different from regular celery too — the flavour is stronger and more concentrated, so a little goes a long way. It’s best sliced a little finer and works beautifully in soups, slow-cooked dishes, stir-fries and stocks where that deeper celery flavour can really shine.

Beautiful to look at, even better to cook with.

It’s taken a bit if effort and a few replantings but we have land cress growing in with our brassicas. We have read that cabbage white moths are attracted to this and will lay their eggs on it, but the leaves are poisonous to the caterpillars. We hope it will work - time will tell! It doesn’t work on grasshoppers who feasted on some of our first brassica plantings!

Update:
We think all compost bins have found new homes, provided they can be collected. Any future enquiries will be put on a waiting list in case any requests fall through.

Do you make your own compost or would like to give it a go? We have several plastic compost bins for composting to give away to another community garden or individuals. Email [email protected] or send a message via Facebook messenger. Note these are for garden/personal use only and are not to be resold.
