🌏 A Million Stories, One Strong Community

The event was a powerful celebration of courage, resilience, diversity and belonging. It was truly inspiring to hear the remarkable journeys of refugees and asylum seekers who have overcome immense challenges to make extraordinary contributions to our community. The stories shared by former Governor of South Australia Hon Hieu Van Le, Flying Officer Kbora Ali, and Vicki Achiro Juma from Adelaide City FC reminded us that every refugee brings strength, talent, hope and a story worth celebrating.

It was great to connect with Hon Nadia Clancy MP, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Louise Miller-Frost MP, Mira El Dannawi MLC, Mayor Michael Coxon,CEO ARA Chris Chalubek,
Cr Quy Tran, SA Multicultural Commission Chair Luisa Greco, Irene Rowe, Costa Rofe ,
and the dedicated team from the Department of Home Affairs, alongside many community leaders, changemakers and advocates committed to building a stronger and more inclusive South Australia.

It was also lovely to catch up with Engineer Mansoor Janjua , sister Etty Garabelli, Peter Taylor (Diversity & Inclusion Officer of SLSC) and many respected leaders and changemakers from our multicultural communities, whose dedication continues to enrich the social fabric of South Australia.

The program concluded on a high note with a fantastic Sufi music performance by renowned Pakistani singer Farhan Ali Shah, bringing people together through the universal language of music and culture.

Congratulations to Ms Mersia Bunjaku, CEO of the Australian Migrant Resource Centre (AMRC), and the entire AMRC team for delivering an outstanding 2026 South Australian Refugee Week Launch, "A Million Stories", at the beautiful Adelaide Town Hall.

Refugee Week reminds us that behind every journey is a story of resilience, courage, hope and determination. Together, we can continue building a South Australia where everyone feels welcomed, valued, included and empowered to thrive.

🌟 Inspired by Extraordinary Australians 🌟

What a wonderful start to the day attending the Australian of the Year Breakfast 2026 at the Adelaide Convention Centre and being surrounded by inspiring Australians whose leadership, service and dedication are making a lasting difference in our communities.

It was a privilege to hear the remarkable and inspiring journey of Katherine Bennell-Pegg, South Australia's own astronaut and space engineer, who was named the 2026 Australian of the Year. Her story of determination, resilience and pursuit of excellence is a powerful reminder to young Australians to dream big, work hard and never give up on their ambitions.

It was also wonderful to catch up with my friend Katrine Hildyard MP( Minister for Women) and to celebrate the achievements of Chloe Wyatt-Jasper, the 2026 SA Young Australian of the Year. At just 16 years of age, Chloe has made an extraordinary contribution through her mental health advocacy, support for survivors of domestic violence and successful campaign for increased youth mental health funding.

Congratulations also to brother Ishaan Chaudhuri, South Australia's 2026 Young Citizen of the Year, whose achievements at such a young age continue to inspire many across our state.

It was lovely to reconnect with brother Aleem Khan, Consultant Psychiatrist, Justin Hanson MLC, Michael Coxon, Mayor of the City of West Torrens, Adriana Christopoulos, former Chair of the S A Multicultural Commission, Monique Bareham(2022 SA Local Hero ) , Julie kerr ( ), Cr Carolyn Martin , executives, representatives , professionals and community leaders from across South Australia.

Congratulations to Jan Chorley, CEO, and the amazing, dedicated and passionate team at the Australia Day Council of South Australia for delivering such a memorable and inspiring event.

Celebration of Community, Inclusion & Belonging

Heaps of congratulations to Kate Leaney and all the wonderful volunteers for creating such a welcoming and inclusive community space. Your dedication to supporting refugees, asylum seekers, new migrants, and established Australians is truly inspiring.

Welcoming Australia is a place where everyone is welcomed, included, and feels a genuine sense of belonging. It reflects the very best of compassion, diversity, and community spirit.

It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and celebrate the rich diversity that makes our community stronger. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of multicultural food, including the delicious dishes from Melh Wa Sekkar Restaurant & Catering, and the warm hospitality that made the event so special.

Thank you to everyone who contributes their time, energy, and passion to building stronger, more connected, and inclusive communities.

♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Honoured to be in the company of inspiring South Australians, including Katherine Bennell-Pegg. Their leadership, dedication, and achievements continue to inspire future generations and showcase the very best of Australia.

Space engineer and astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg was named the 2026 Australian of the Year. She made history in 2024 as the first person to officially graduate and qualify as an astronaut under the Australian flag, completing rigorous training at the European Astronaut Centre.

Alongside her space missions and engineering career, Bennell-Pegg is an energetic champion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). She regularly tours states and territories to speak to schoolchildren and industry leaders, inspiring the next generation of space professionals. She uses her platform to promote Australia's growing space sector and highlight the tangible benefits space exploration brings to the broader economy.
