Stillrunning For Stillbirth

Stillrunning For Stillbirth I’m Michelle and in Nov ‘24 I ran from Adelaide to Port Fairy, 569kms in 11 days and raised over $100,000 for the Stillbirth Foundation Australia.

Stillbirth is the silent public health crisis the world keeps overlooking.

In Australia, stillbirth rates have not improved in more than 20 years. We still lose 2,200 babies every year, six families every single day and the national trend line is completely flat.

Meanwhile, global child mortality has halved.

We know what works. We know up to 30% of stillbirths are preventable through simple, evidence‑based behaviours.

What is missing is coordinated awareness the same kind of public health effort that transformed outcomes in SIDS, road safety, and child mortality.

That is why we created Stillrunning for Stillbirth a lived experience led movement built in South Australia, designed to scale nationally, and ready to support global action.

We have already begun:

- launching public billboards
- activating national media partnerships
- building a community of families and clinicians
- produced the documentary Her Name is Celeste
- developing a full national awareness campaign with NATION

Today I am sharing:
1️⃣ The flat‑line stillbirth chart - 20 years of no improvement (AIHW)
2️⃣ A national campaign teaser - the front page of the movement we are building

And for anyone wanting to understand the human story behind the statistics, our documentary is freely available: https://youtu.be/B8I6b7pIMhQ

The world has already shown what’s possible when awareness and action align. Stillbirth deserves the same global effort.

For every baby lost,
and every baby we can save.

A huge thank you to for their ongoing support of our stillbirth prevention campaign.

Since May 2024, GOA have provided continuous digital billboard space across Queensland, rotating our message weekly.

This level of in kind support is rare. It has allowed us to reach hundreds of thousands of Australians with a simple, life saving message:

Stillbirth is preventable. Know the signs. Take action.

GOA’s leadership has shown what is possible when media partners step up for public health.

We are inviting others to join us as we take this message across Australia.

Thank you .bock for sending me this from your Japan wanderings, so beautiful 💜

These are “care guardian deities of children”. They are dedicated for the safety growth of children and grandchildren, as well as for the memorial service for stillbirth or miscarried children.

To protect and keep warm their heads, “red hat” “red apron” and windmill”, were dedicated to the guardian deity of children image.

Instead of messaging someone who is grieving, “let me know how I can help” message “I’m just popping around to….

• drop you dinner
• pick up your laundry
• drop child/children to school
• pick up your shopping list
• take you out for a walk
• pop in with coffee
• give you a hug 🥰

Messages are important for those that are grieving, to know they have support. However, a person grieving will not always have the capacity to reach out to take up your offer of help, so be a little proactive.

Australia still has no national stillbirth awareness campaign despite 2,200 babies dying every year and rates not improving in two decades.

So, we are not waiting.

We have released our documentary “Her Name is Celeste” publicly and FREE for anyone, anywhere in the world. It is our daughter’s story and the story of thousands of families who live with silence, stigma, and preventable loss.

Watch the film - https://youtu.be/B8I6b7pIMhQ

We are now building Australia’s first lived experience led national stillbirth awareness campaign one that reaches future parents everywhere.

A campaign that normalises prevention behaviours and drives real cultural change.

The most precious thing I can hear or see today, is Celeste’s name 🦋

Celeste wasn’t on our original list of names for a girl, but when she was born sleeping those names didn’t seem to fit all the stillness that surrounded us.

Celeste means heavenly and to us she is a star that shines bright on a clear night to remind us she is there 🌟 so when you next look out and see that extra bright star, give her a cheeky hi as I know she would love it 🩷

Say their name day is a day to utter the word that bereaved parents don’t get to hear everyday 💜

How are you coping not running?

I’ve had a bit of time to ponder this to try and make it make sense in my head. I think I’ve finally nailed it.

Not being able to run is like losing a best friend, not just any best friend, but the one that sits with you through the most uncomfortable times, the one that listens knowing I’m not asking them for a solution, the one that says that’s f #%ked because it is.

Running is where I felt closest to Celeste because although I was sitting in a place of peace, it was also a place of discomfort, which can release a whole bunch of thoughts and emotions. Running wasn’t exercise for me, it was therapy, it was fun, it was challenging and it was part of what made me, me.

I unfortunately may never get back to being able to run like I use too, it’s too soon to tell, that makes it harder to process, as in the past with injuries I always had a way back, that I was in control of and generally it involved being patient.

I’m still trying to embrace new activities, it’s not easy, but know it could actually be worse. So I will keep working through this until it gives me what I’m looking for.

Last week I sat down with the inspirational Dawn, who has recently completed a run/ride around Australia…15,000kms 🤯

Anyway we chatted about my run last year, endurance events, planning these events, what can go NOT to plan, how we respond to that and why if you have a reason, anything is possible.

It may just inspire, plant a seed or help you understand what each of us are really capable of if we allow ourselves to dream ☺️

You can listen over on Spotify 💜

I don’t want you running.

I’ve heard that before, BUT this time it was different, it was followed up with, foreseeable future, we need to find you low impact activities to meet your exertion requirements for your mental health, possibly down the track when we have your condition under control you could use a crosstrainer.

Last week after a rough couple of months I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica, it’s not life threatening but it’s painful and debilitating if not managed. Fortunately my Sports Dr was experienced in this condition and I am already seeing dramatic relief with medication.

Anyway I’m not looking to discuss PMR, nor do I need advice on nutrition, exercise or vaccines… this is about having something I love taken from me with no guarantee I will get it back.

The Sports Doc’s suggestions may all seem reasonable, swimming, cycling, walking, but for me running on the trails was more than just exercising, it was about the adventure, the challenge.

For those that have ever joined me over the years will know what it means to me, it’s where I feel most connected to my daughter, where I can get lost for hours, where I talk to the animals and where I always choose the hilly track over the flat one, because it makes you feel strong when you reach the top.

Anyway this is by no means the hardest thing I’ve faced, I mean my baby died, but it doesn’t mean I’m not struggling processing this new challenge ahead.

So bare with me as I work this out, and in the meantime if you have a great lemonade recipe, I’d love to hear it 🍋
