In SA, 24 people drowned last year. Every one was preventable.

Drowning is not inevitable, it is a consequence of unequal access to water safety education. Royal Life Saving SA exists to change that.

Every year, we work across South Australia to give children, families, older adults, and multicultural communities the skills and knowledge to be safer around water.

This June, help us keep going. Donate before June 30 and make a difference in drowning prevention, your gift may be tax deductible.

The long weekend is here, and with recent heavy rain across South Australia, we're urging everyone to take extra care around inland waterways.

If you're heading away this weekend:

✔️ Check weather, flood, and waterway conditions before you go.
✔️Never drive, ride, or walk through floodwaters.
✔️Be aware that rivers, lakes, dams, and creeks may have changed significantly following recent heavy rainfall, with stronger currents, submerged hazards, unstable banks, and debris creating additional risks.
✔️Avoid going alone.
✔️If you're around water, avoid alcohol and always wear a lifejacket

Stay safe and enjoy the long weekend.

This month, we wrapped up the latest Beach Smarts for Life session in Tasmania 🌊

Over the past year, we’ve had the privilege of delivering this program across South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania, with over 250 registrations from members of the Chinese community eager to build confidence and stay safer around water.

Through this program, participants gained essential water safety knowledge and practical skills, including CPR awareness, in-water survival skills, beach safety awareness, and dry rescue techniques.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, it was wonderful to see the support and engagement for such a valuable community iniative. We hope you’ve walked away feeling more confident around waterways, equipped with valuable safety knowledge, and empowered to make safer decisions in and around the water. We’ve loved delivering these sessions and sharing the experience with you.

We’d also like to sincerely thank our venue partners, Life Saving Victoria, Royal Life Saving Tasmania, and National Foundation for Australia-China Relations 澳中基金会, for their support in making these sessions possible.

This week is National Volunteer Week, and we want to take a moment to celebrate every single person who gives their time to make our communities safer in and around water.

Whether you're helping deliver swim lessons, supporting water safety education sessions, examining Bronze awards, or simply showing up and giving your time to this space - what you do matters more than you know.

To our volunteers, and to every volunteer working in water safety and aquatics across the country, thank you.

Today, we pause to honour the bravery and sacrifice of our ANZACs, past and present.

We remember with gratitude all who have served, hold in our thoughts the families who stand beside them, and stand in solidarity with communities affected by war.

Lest we forget.

This ANZAC Day Weekend, if you’re heading to the water with your mates, take a moment to look out for each other.

Sadly, drowning continues to affect more men than women and too often, it's linked to risk-taking behaviours.

Whether you’re swimming, boating or just relaxing by the water, Make the Right Call:

✔️Avoid alcohol around water
✔️Wear a lifejacket
✔️Don’t go alone

Honour the day safely and make sure your mates make it home.

Thinking about one last splash before school’s back? 💦

With the warm weather and the school holidays wrapping up, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the water, but safety should always come first.

Drowning risk doesn’t end with summer. In fact, more than half of drownings in SA happen outside the summer months. For young children, swimming pools are the most common location.

If you’re heading in or around the water, be prepared and always actively supervise children.

Remember the simple actions that help keep kids safe:
Supervise. Restrict. Teach. Respond.

Earlier this month, we wrapped up our March Aqua Smarts for the Young at Heart program đź’§

Designed for those over 50, this program supports both beginners and those looking to refresh their skills. It’s a true all-rounder, combining swimming development, water safety knowledge, and essential CPR training.

We saw a wonderful mix of participants: locals keen to be part of a welcoming community program at The Oaks Swim Centre, travellers brushing up on their emergency response skills, and those who simply enjoy the water and wanted to build safer practices. The feedback from participants has been fantastic.

Interested? Don’t worry, you can still join our current session, although there are only a few spots left!

When: Every Monday, 13 April – 18 May
Where: The Oaks Swim Centre, 11 Blacks Road, Gilles Plains SA
Cost: Free

Each session introduces different skills and is adapted to suit a range of abilities.

Confidence grows with safe practice đź’™

Spending time in the water can be a wonderful way to stay active, relax, and connect with others, whether that’s at the pool, beach, or local river. But if you haven’t had much experience in aquatic environments, it’s completely normal to feel unsure or hesitant.

Building your skills step by step can help you feel more comfortable and in control, so you can enjoy the water safely and with confidence.

Aqua Smart for the Young at Heart is a free program designed for adults aged 50+ who are new to the water or want to improve their confidence. In a friendly, small group setting, you’ll learn practical skills at your own pace.

Enjoy the water, your way.

Don't miss your opportunity to join us at the Oaks Swim Centre, Gilles Plains, every Monday from 14 April to 18 May from 12:15-1:00pm for this free program.

Even active adults can face risks in aquatic environments.

As Australia’s population ages, more people are living longer, healthier, and more active lives. However, we’re also seeing an increase in drowning incidents among adults aged 50+, highlighting the importance of older adults learning and refreshing safe skills in the water.

Aqua Smart for the Young at Heart is a free community program designed specifically for adults 50+.

The program supports your independence by helping you build confidence and practical water safety skills in a small, supportive group environment.

Enrolments are now open for April, with limited spots available.

Join us at the Oaks Swim Centre, Gilles Plains, every Monday from 14 April to 18 May from 12:15-1:00pm for this free program.
