Meet Kerry & James!

The Carer Council is a dedicated group of Foster and Kinship Carers who provide advice directly to the ‌Minister for Child Protection.

Today, we are introducing two members who bring incredible expertise from both their caring and professional lives:

🎨 Kerry and her husband have been kinship carers for just over 12 years, caring for varying numbers of their five grandchildren throughout this time. Kerry is a regional-based carer who worked in education prior to her caring role and is a practicing artist specialising in textile art.

🔬 James and his husband are specialist foster carers for two children. Professionally, James is a secondary school science and mathematics teacher with a passion for STEM education, student leadership development and creating inclusive spaces within schools.

Thank you, Kerry and James, for your incredible dedication and for being a strong voice for our community.

📖 Stay tuned for more member spotlights coming soon!

🙏🏽 Please remember Carer Council members are family-based carers, bravely using their lived experience to provide the Minister with expert advice. Please respect their privacy and the sensitivities of foster and kinship caring.

Our CEO, Russell Hooper, and Senior Advocate, Sharee Borlace, were delighted to attend the "Beyond the Game: Leaders in Sport" networking event recently at Mawson Lakes. It was an inspiring morning listening to sporting legends whilst raising much-needed funds for Wolfpack’s mentoring work.

A key highlight for our team was hearing from Corey, Founder of Wolfpack Academy, speak on “the power of sport and the importance of stability in the lives of children and young people in care.” At CF&KC-SA, we recognise that opportunities like this are beneficial for carer families.

Wolfpack Academy is currently looking for new players to join their "Pack" for Term 2. This basketball program provides mentorship to young individuals who face unique challenges and big emotions, led by dedicated coaches with a passion for guiding young athletes.

We encourage you to find out more via the Wolfpack website:

Did you know free training is available for young people with care experience? 🎓

Young people aged 16 and over who are, or have ever been, under a Guardianship Order in Australia are eligible to apply to Skills SA (Department of State Development) for a fee exemption on a wide range of subsidised training courses.

To ensure our community has the most up-to-date information, our Senior Advocate, Sharee Borlace, and Carer Council Project Lead, Lauren Deer, recently met with Julian Valente and Sandra Miller from Skills SA. The meeting was a fantastic opportunity for our team to discuss this great government initiative and learn more about how carers can best support young people to apply.

Over the last fortnight, Russell (our new CEO), has been meeting with key leaders across the state to discuss the power of collaboration in the child protection and care sector.

As Russell noted: "A key focus of the discussions has been on how we can collaborate and best support the people who care for some of South Australia's most vulnerable children and young people."

A huge thank you to everyone who has welcomed Russell so warmly, including:
