📢 HELP NEEDED - INFO FOR MEDIA REPORT 📢

Homebirth midwives, especially those in regional areas - if your business is at risk of closure next year as a result of the end of the PII exemption, can you please leave a comment or send us a message if preferred with which state you're in as well!

Please share with as many PPMs as you can so we can give the most accurate numbers we can.

Especially critical for QLD midwives, this is likely to be a QLD state media story 🤞

Thanks in advance 🙏🔥

We are absolutely delighted to announce the winner of our artwork competition for our 38th Homebirth Australia Conference - this gorgeous work by Emilia Bhat will feature throughout the next 10 months as we prepare for our conference.

We love the way the conference theme "Homegrown Homebirth: Connecting Communities" absolutely shines in this artwork.

Presale will be closing soon, if not sold out first - be sure to get your tickets ASAP!

Catherine (Maternity Choices Australia ) and Katelyn (Homebirth Australia Homebirth New South Wales ) were at Parliament House today having some meetings with MPs on the impending second midwife crisis following the final exemption for PII ending at the end of this year.

We had some good discussions with MPs who have also made some suggestions about what our next moves might be. We may even get some more statements in Parliament out of our efforts today.

It's critical that we keep this issue at the forefront of our MPs minds right now - we know it feels exhausting (believe us, for us too) but we cannot afford to take our foot off the gas as our dear Elaine Norling would say.

The pressure is mounting on the government for action. Please keep sharing the petition link and trying to reach your MPs.

We are concerned that the only solutions being discussed at higher levels seem to promote the need for the second midwife to be endorsed, but we KNOW that must be a more creative solution possible.

Our email campaign continues, but we must remember that our emails are one of sometimes hundreds that an MP can receive in a day. If you are wanting to continue to put pressure on, we need you to:

- write and post a handwritten letter to your MP (more effort than an email, but exactly why it receives more attention)
- call your MPs office and ask for a meeting. You do NOT need to be an expert, we guarantee you already know more than them about this issue. We have resources to help you, and are happy to be video conferenced into your meeting if we can do so
- even better, a visit to your MPs local office to ask for a meeting. Someone going out of their way and taking time out of their day is taken much more seriously than an email in their inbox and it tells them this is a real issue they need to be listening to

If you are in Mark Butler (Minister for Health) or Rebecca White (Assistant Minister for Health) electorates, these actions are even more critical.

If you are a homebirther who is going to be impacted by this expiring exemption, explain exactly how it will impact you i.e. the only private midwife in our area will not be taking on homebirths now and so I must travel ###kms to the local hospital to birth/will be choosing to freebirth/will be travelling ###xkms to have a homebirth/will not be able to access any midwifery continuity of care etc.

If you are a midwife, same deal, explain the specific implications for you and your business if relevant l.e. will need to reduce caseload by half/X amount of women, will need to stop offering homebirth services, close my business, etc.

The MPs need to understand the implications and hearing it from their constituents is the best way to achieve that.

If you are happy to have your circumstances used as a case study and potentially talk to local media, please contact us (DM or email [email protected]) so we can add you to our list while we keep pushing for more exposure and more urgency from the government.

⚠️ **SCAM EMAIL ALERT**

We've been made aware of fraudulent emails currently circulating that are **impersonating current and former Homebirth Australia and Homebirth NSW representatives**.

These emails are NOT from HBA or HBNSW.

The scam emails we have seen:

→ use the name/title of an HBA or HBNSW representative
→ come from an unrelated Gmail or other email address
→ ask whether you're available to communicate by email
→ may say the person is in a meeting and can't speak by phone
→ after you reply, ask you to purchase **Amazon gift cards** with a promise that you'll be reimbursed

**Please do not purchase anything, send money, provide personal information or continue corresponding with the sender.**

If you receive one:

1. Use your email provider's **Report phishing** function.
2. Delete the email.
3. Consider reporting it to Scamwatch.
4. Send us a screenshot or forward the email so we can keep track of the accounts being used.

Scammers can obtain names, roles and contact information from publicly available websites and documents. There is currently **no indication that these emails are being sent from HBA/HBNSW email accounts**.

HBA and HBNSW will **never ask you to purchase gift cards on our behalf and promise to reimburse you later.**

If you're ever unsure whether an email from us is genuine, contact us separately through our official channels rather than replying to the email.

Please share this with other midwives and birth professionals who may be targeted.

Very quick campaign updates here plus what we need from you now!

If your electorate has sent a LOT of emails and people are demanding meetings with no response, we need to know so we can work with you on where to go next.

Our plan is for small local demonstrations outside MP offices in those areas that aren't getting adequate responses from their MP.

However, it's important that we've put the pressure in the right place first before we jump to demonstrating and make sure they've received the phone calls, they're hearing the urgency, and they've been given the opportunity to respond.

The goal is building a working relationship with your MP, not just pi***ng them off.

That being said, if your MP doesn't come to the party, then they also need to be held accountable for not making time for their constituents.

Any questions at all, please contact us - we are here and happy to help.

Please do keep us in the loop with how your contact with MPs is going, we don't see the responses you get from them, so please do forward them to us or send us a screenshot so we can keep track of who is committing to what and know where to focus our energy and attention next.

Lastly, just a great big thank you to every one of you who has written to their MP, this is a grassroots movement and requires a huge vocal community push against the very loud and well funded medical lobbies, which is the reality of who we're up against. Medicine has a vested interest in keeping birth out of the hands of women. We aren't going to roll over and let it happen, and we know you aren't either 🔥

Keep sharing, keep reminding people to send an email. We've more than doubled our numbers since this time last week, can we keep it going??
