SA Lived Experience Leadership & Advocacy Network

SA Lived Experience Leadership & Advocacy Network At LELAN we amplify the voice, influence and leadership of people with lived experience of distress and/or mental health issues to drive systemic change.

LELAN was founded in 2017 to provide a way for people with lived experience of distress or mental health issues to have a voice and collectively influence change in South Australia. LELAN aims to be a strong, independent and sustainable organisation that is by, for and with people with personal lived experience of mental health issues (consumers). We value the support of carers, allies, other peop

le and organisations who join us in making a difference for how distress and mental health issues are understood and supported in our state. LELAN’s purpose is to amplify the voice, influence and leadership of people with lived experience to drive systemic change. The organisation has three areas of focus:

1. developing the capability and influence of people with lived experience

2. nurturing organisational and sector capacity for engaging with people with lived experience, and

3. impacting system improvement agendas to benefit people with lived experience

[EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST NOW OPEN] Are you interested in becoming an Alt2Su Peer Group Facilitator?

We are currently recruiting more people with a lived experience of suicidality to facilitate in person Alternatives to Su***de Groups with LELAN. Interested applicants must be available to attend the 3-day facilitator training from Monday March 30 to Wednesday April 1 in the Adelaide CBD.

Alt2Su groups offer non-clinical spaces where people can be honest about their experiences without fear of forced treatment, other forms of coercion, or risk assessment that shuts conversation down. They run for 90 minutes, and are facilitated by people with a lived experience of suicidality who have been trained in the approach that was developed by Wildflower Alliance in the US.

Once trained, facilitators are supported by LELAN through ongoing training, debriefing, and group reflective practice, and receive an honorarium per group for their lived expertise.

For more information or to express your interest visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/7FNYVJ6 . Expressions of Interest close Monday March 16th at 5pm, and successful applicants will be contacted shortly after.

If you have any questions, please contact LELAN via email [email protected] or phone 0431 953 526

[WE STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE CHORUS]: 'In big reforms, things are rarely perfect at the beginning. Instead of cuts, what we need now is time.

This will allow for the foundations of reform to solidify – for the mental health power structures to adjust, for understanding of lived experience to increase and for change to be felt more strongly in communities.

Real change, cultural and transformational change, takes investment, creativity, courage, deep discomfort and defiant persistence. All things people with lived experience know a hell of a lot about' [Katie Larsen via ].

We appreciate the link to LELAN's One Radical Idea publication as evidence of what has been 'consistently demanded by people who use services in Australia'. You can read that work over at www.lelan.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Report_One-Radical-or-Innovative-Idea_Feb2025_Printing.pdf .
