Biology Society of South Australia Participate - volunteer on conservation projects
Discover - learn about SA's biodiversity
Connect - network with like minded people

The primary aim of the Biology Society of South Australia (BSSA) is to develop and maintain contact between people with an interest in field biology and the conservation and management of natural resources in South Australia. Membership includes professional biologists (university staff, public servants, consultants, teachers), past graduates, postgraduates and undergraduate students, as well as i

nterested members of the general public. The major activity of the BSSA is to provide opportunities for people to assist with various field research programs. Many of these opportunities will be voluntary but some may include paid work. Our intention is to develop a network of people interested in assisting with field activities and so facilitate the provision of people resources to help researchers. Thus, if a postgraduate student needed some assistance in radio-tracking possums or plotting the movements of tagged birds, or staff of a government agency needed someone to help dig and manage pitfall traps in inland South Australia, then they could approach the BSSA for assistance. The society would circulate information to members about these opportunities and individual members would then make a direct approach to the person seeking assistance if they were interested. Requests for assistance are distributed quarterly via a newsletter, with more up-to-date information provided through this web page. Becoming a member of the Biology Society is an excellent way for people with an incline for adventure to get involved with a variety of field based projects, to establish important contacts for future employment and best of all meet some very interesting and fun people! Join the Biology Society for a fungi-filled citizen science day as part of the Fungi for Function research project! 🍄

The project, developed by Fungimap and other partners, is investigating whether 28 target fungi species across four functional groups can be used as indicators of bushland condition. Help survey both good and degraded condition plots at the Trees for life Bushcare site at Lenswood Centennial Park, Lobethal Rd, Lenswood.

Attendance is free, but you must register using the link in our bio to receive the online training videos. 🚨WHEN REGISTERING - you may tick any of the attendance days, but be sure to tick the 11th July to come along for the BSSA Nature Walk specifically!

The plots will be situated on a short steep slope, which may be slippery at times. We will use the iNaturalist app throughout the day!

Can’t wait to see you there! 💚

We’ve got an exciting seminar lined up for May! 🎉

Join us and the Arabana and Friends of Mound Springs on Thursday the 28th of May as we explore the Kutha Ngarrawa (Mound Springs) – their unique ecology, cultural significance, and the work being done to protect them.

Perfect for anyone curious about arid landscapes, you will discover more about the hidden life of the Mound Springs on Arabana Country— a complex ecosystem fed by the Great Artesian Basin.

This year, on top of our BSSA field research grant, we are excited to offer a secondary grant: The Neagle Resilience and Restoration Research Grant 2026 🌳

Honouring the contribution of the late Nick Neagle to South Australian biodiversity, this grant wouldn’t be possible without generous funding provided by 💚 Nick Neagle’s passion for natural ecosystems has made a lasting impact on environmental knowledge and policy in SA, and we are honoured to facilitate his memory through funding vital vegetation work.

Funds of up to $3,000 are available to support a project that focuses on research and/or knowledge compilation (ie vegetation surveys) that assist with conservation or restoration activities in SA. Ideally, this research will have short-term outputs with long-term objectives and values.

If this sounds like your research, head to the link in our bio for more information! Applications close on the 21st May, so don’t delay 🔬💚

Some pics from our first Nature Walk of the year, highlighting some devastating problems that the algae bloom has caused.

Once a flourishing habitat, the algae bloom has wiped out 80% of the biodiversity on the rocks at Hallett Cove, having flow on effects to less birds visiting the site, too. The weather was gorgeous, and there is still some exciting geology in the area, but unfortunately not a lot to see — lots of important conversations were had about conservation though, and what needs to happen asap! 🐚🦀

Thank you to all who came!
