Our Story
__________ WHO WAS JASON? “Jason Mahoney was my brother in law, married to my wife’s sister Kylie and father to three beautiful little girls. He was a Federal Agent and had spent a greater part of the last three years of his life working overseas peace keeping, whilst his family stayed back home in Australia. Jason was working in East Timor when he fell ill with leukaemia. I have the utmost respect and admiration for Jason and Kylie as I watched them fight the fight of their lives with an incredible attitude that was nothing but positive and inspiring. Jason was fortunate enough to undergo a bone marrow transplant in March 2010, unfortunately this treatment failed, and Jason lost his fight to this terrible disease and passed away in September 2010. Jason was a man admired by all around him. Until the day he lost his battle he continued to put others first.” Gary Thankfully for Jason, the ‘Fight Cancer Foundation’ (Formally the Bone Marrow Donor Institute) were with the Mahoney’s every step of the way. __________ HISTORY OF THE CureTOUR The CureTOUR (previously known as the ‘Tour For Cure’) began in 2010 to both honour Jason and the legacy he has left, and in an effort to support the work the Fight Cancer Foundation. Previous ride: Tour For Cure 2010 – Adelaide to Geelong In 2010, Gary Carnell, Mark Gray, Andrew Short and Richard Trewen, with support from Ben Carnell, Hamish Gray and Ric Ellis rode from Adelaide to Geelong. The ride finished (quite excitingly) under a police es**rt and inside the main shopping centre, coinciding with the UCI Road World Championships in Geelong. Covering nearly 1000kms, the inaugural ride was successful in raising nearly $20,000. Previous ride: Tour For Cure 2012 – Geelong to Adelaide In 2012, and with more people coming on-board, the Tour For Cure regrouped for the ride back along the Great Ocean road! During September of that year, the group left from Geelong and finished in Adelaide 7 days later to a very appreciated BBQ party! This ride was completed by Ben Carnell, Gary Carnell, Stuart Foster, Mark Gray, Andrew Short, and Richard Trewen with fantastic support from Bryce Foster, Ray Mundy, and Mike West. This ride again was a great success thanks to people like yourselves, as we brought our total tally to $40, 000. Previous ride: CureTOUR 2014 – Adelaide to Geelong (via the Riverland) In our biggest ride to date, a group of 10 riders set off from Adelaide to Geelong heading through NSW. With 1000kms completed in 7 days, this fundraising ride was undertaken by Glenn Baddenhop, Nigel Brinkley, Ben Carnell, Gary Carnell, Andrew Craib, Mark Gray, Andrew Menzies, Andrew Short, Malcolm Stewart, and Richard Trewen, with really great support from Kelvin and Michael Brinkley. We were rapt to see the funding for this ride more than double our target - thanks to many people, we raised over $67,000.
Previous ride: CureTOUR 2016 - Adelaide to Geelong(via the Great Ocean Rd) In this fourth edition we hit the 1300km mark, across 8 days. We followed the coast line right to Geelong, include a final around Port Philip Bay in a day challenge. We were rapt to see our finally tally for this ride exceed $100,000. Who played a crucial part? Glenn Baddenhop Nigel Brinkley, Ben Carnell, Gary Carnell, Andrew Craib, Matt Crinion, Steven Friend, Mark Gray, Johnny Lepley, and Paul Mundy, with strong support from Kelvin Brinkley and Ray Mundy.
Throughout these rides we have been supported by you, our friends, as well as radio stations, newspapers, and community events - something we didn't really imagine at the beginning. We are extremely thankful for the support everyone has given us in growing the CureTOUR over the years, and helping to fund the work that the Fight Cancer Foundation does.
So far CureTOUR has collectively raised $230,000!! But... we want to do more!
