Last Friday night, Tales From Improcity completed an epic improv double header as part of Improcity Improv Cabaret at Hymn Bar. We were given a look behind the scenes of a puppet factory, where beautiful artisan puppets were hand made from the wood of the purple jacaranda tree. Sure, they maybe slightly racist but they'll definitely sell!

Thanks to all the cast who led us down this dark and hysterical road. Remember, the purpliness is in all of us!

OTF MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: TIERNEY MAREY 💧🧎

Six years of a PhD.
A full-time job.
A brand new city full of possibilities.

And what does Tierney do with her precious spare time? Joins an Impro group and starts choosing violence.

Honestly, Flyers, she was always going to fit right in.

Since joining OTF in April 2025, Tierney has gone from a nervous first jam to the Maestro stage at Adelaide Fringe. She’s found her people, rediscovered her playful side and made Adelaide feel like home.

If you’re watching a show with Tierney in it - theres a very high likelihood that at some stage she will be choosing violence.

Her advice for Impro?

“When in doubt make the situation worse for someone.”

Excellent life advice, Tierney. No notes.

Tierney is also OBSESSED with otters. She’s been sent the story ‘Florida woman pretends to be zoo guide and makes up facts about otters’ countless times, usually with the accompanying message: “dis you?”

And honestly? Fair.

Her bestie has described her spirit animal as “slinky, playful, clever and can be vicious when their loved ones are threatened.”

Not stinky. Slinky.

But here’s the really lovely bit. Tierney describes OTF as one of the kindest, most welcoming, thoughtful and generous communities she’s ever been part of. A place where she’s felt at home, made lovely friends and found people who’ll support her whether she has her best night or her worst.

As Tierney puts it:

“Give it a go. Then another one. Then again. You might just surprise yourself.”

And that, Flyers, is what we’re all about. Being brave enough to give it a go, having a ridiculous amount of fun, finding your people and discovering what happens when you say yes to the unexpected.

Tonight, Tierney is bringing her particular brand of chaos to The Living Room at Hymn Bar followed by the Improcity crew.

Meet Your new OTF Committee

Since Steve Brady joined the committee, we felt it would be remiss not to go full Brady Bunch. Unfortunately Meta won’t let us play the theme - so please hum it to yourself as you read on….

Dylan Haar returns as Artistic Director and takes the role of Carol Brady, keeping the family creative and heading in the same direction.

Every Brady family needs an Alice, and that’s Steyn Sharman, our returning Chair, quietly making everything happen.

The rest of the family:

Wojtek Stec is Mike Brady, securing venues and handling the grown-up responsibilities.

Acacia King is Marcia Brady, helping make the shows happen. Marcia, Marcia, Marcia.

Tigga Savage is Cindy Brady, getting the Troupe together and bringing energy to everything OTF does.

Andrew Saul, sorry Andrew, is Jan Brady. As Treasurer, he spends his time worrying about budgets while everyone else gets the attention.

Allan Wallace is Bobby Brady, quietly keeping everyone organised and on track.

And there are our new cast members -
Jeremy Ryder is Peter Brady, inspired by ‘The Great Earring Caper’ and Peter’s brief detective career. Unlike Peter, Jeremy actually has the qualifications. He’s a Doctor of Criminology, OTF performer, and now our resident mystery solver.

And then there’s Steve Brady, our Greg Brady. A fresh flyer in the same way that Greg was a teenager.

Every sitcom has cast changes.
We farewell Cathy Sheargold , who definitely did not write this paragraph herself despite being remarkably intelligent, attractive, universally admired and an exceptional maker of scones. Like Kerry Hathaway, she left us wanting more. Unfortunately, she also still has access to the OTF socials.

We also farewell Dennis Andreisen , who is off to pursue high-powered lawyering. Channelling Mike Brady in Season 3, Episode 23, we’re sure Dennis will be exposing fraudulent neck braces and winning courtroom battles with perfectly timed dramatic reveals.

And that’s the way we became the OTF Committee. Here’s to another season of laughter, friendship, improvisation and somehow getting everything done before opening night.

THEATRESPORTS TRAINING STARTS THIS WEEK

Every great team needs a coach.

Every great coach needs a clipboard.

And every great Theatresports performer needs to remember one very important thing:

BELIEVE.

Also...

“Be a goldfish.”

In the words of Ted Lasso: the goldfish is the happiest animal on Earth because it has a 10-second memory.

Made a terrible choice? Be a goldfish.

Forgot what just happened? Perfect. Keep playing.

Coaches Steyn and Andrew are taking our experienced Flyers through seven weeks of training, teamwork, ridiculous challenges and getting competition-ready for OTF’s Theatresports shows in November.

Expect:
• Team skills
• Short-form mastery
• Characters, games and challenges
• Winning
• Losing
• Questionable sporting metaphors
• The occasional bucket of shame

Who will rise to glory?

Who will crack under pressure?

Who will wear the bucket?

Well, Steve. Obviously.

But mostly...

DUN DUN.

In the improvised justice system, the people are represented by two separate but equally important groups:

Those who say “yes” to an idea...

And those who know how to turn that idea into an ACTUAL SCENE.

These are their stories.

MAKE A SCENE!

You’ve learned to embrace happy failure. You’ve learned to jump into the unknown. You’ve learned that you don’t need to know what happens next.

Now the evidence is piling up.

A character with no wants.
A scene with no platform.
A story that wandered off somewhere around minute three.
A perfectly good idea that nobody followed.

The case is clear.

You need to Make a Scene

Over seven weeks, Curtis will help you crack the case. You’ll learn how to set the stage, find your platform, create bold characters, make things change and weave your scenes into stories with satisfying payoffs.

There will be performances. Witness testimony. Gentle feedback. Questionable character choices. And plenty of opportunities to get up there and see what happens.

Whether you’ve just graduated from Intro to Impro or your scenework muscles are getting a little dusty, this is your chance to sharpen them up.
