Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds

Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds CPG exposes the cruelty and corruption of greyhound racing. We fight to close it down by influencing public opinion and targetting state governments.

The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds Inc. was started by several members of the Animal Justice Party with a special interest in greyhounds in 2015 after the Four Corners live baiting expose. Today the Coalition is a mix of independent greyhound welfare campaigners, representatives of various animal welfare activist groups and representatives of greyhound rescue groups from across Austral

Jabberwocky was the latest victim of Victoria's killing machine.

He collided and fell on Sportsbet's Shepparton curved track. It was an awful fall, he's clearly suffering as he somersaults, his mouth open in pain. His humerus was fractured and he was killed by the on-track vet.

His short life was measured in greed and gambling dollars.

There have been more than 30 racing deaths on Victorian tracks this year. All endorsed by the Jacinta Allan Government.

Wherever you are across Australia, please write to your local MP and demand an end to this horror. You can also use our email template (link in the comments).

The move to ban greyhound racing in South Australia gathered strength this week.

A petition calling for the end of dog racing, with more than 11,000 hand-written signatures, was tabled in South Australia's parliament on Wednesday.

We're asking everyone to add their voice to this call by contacting Premier Malinauskas ([email protected]) and the Racing Minister Rhiannon Pearce ([email protected]). If you're an SA resident, please copy in your local state MP. Visit our website for more information, direct link in the comments.

Greens MLC Melanie Selwood also moved a motion in the upper house calling on the state government to “take immediate action to ban the practice of greyhound racing in South Australia”.

Selwood said the petition showed the "community want us to end this practice."

The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds petition was tabled by Labor MP Cressida O’Hanlon, who acknowledged "the extraordinary level of community engagement represented by this petition."

The industry was given until July 2026 to meet recommendations for reform, with Greyhound Industry Reform Inspector Sal Perna soon to report on their implementation.

The latest data from Greyhound Racing SA shows an alarming deterioration in the state's welfare standards.

The injury rate of 43.67 injuries per 1,000 starts is a 41 per cent increase over the previous quarter and Australia's highest rate by far.

South Australia's injury rates for the most serious categories - Category D and F - are also the worst in Australia.

The NSW gambling/racing industry is hyping up the “puppy auction” later this month. You can buy a “racing prospect” - the puppies aren't given a name, just a lot number. It is the start of a life where your only value is as a disposable gambling chip.

Young dogs are sent to the “breakers” between 12 and 15 months old. Breaking-in is “an intensive form of physical and mental training”. Even Greyhound Racing Victoria says chasing a lure “doesn’t come naturally to all greyhounds”.

Breaking puppies, breaking lives. The industry doesn't think you deserve a name until you start racing - so the punters know where to place their bets. GWIC data shows that 1,153 greyhound deaths were reported in FY25, 247 of those greyhounds were unnamed. A grim life awaits.

Killed in his first race on 10 June at Richmond NSW - Bounding Rupee’s skull smashed into the catching pen gate.

Apparently he followed the lure along the running rail and crashed into the gate, head first. Another failure of track infrastructure on a track that doesn't meet minimum standards.

Another life taken, another greyhound for the Richmond track body freezer.

14 dogs died in catching pens nationwide last year.

As citizens, we’re sick of hearing about the latest cruelty outrage like the agonising death of Bounding Rupee. We’re appalled that politicians are so addicted to betting revenue and donations that they ignore the abuse of dogs for gambling money. State and Territory MPs have the power to stop this. That's why it is so powerful to write to your local MP and demand action.

This is a critical time for SA greyhounds and they need your help.

Following the damning Ashton report into the industry, Premier Peter Malinauskas gave Greyhound Racing SA a two-year ultimatum to clean up its act or face closure.

That time is up on 8 July 2026 when the Premier will receive a final report on whether the 87 report recommendations have been successfully implemented. An increase in deaths and serious injuries, continued overbreeding and lack of welfare oversight shows that the answer is no.

Please email Premier Malinauskas ([email protected]) and the Racing Minister Rhiannon Pearce ([email protected]). If you're an SA resident, please copy in your local state MP. Along with your own insights and experience, please highlight that two years of reform have made little difference to the lives of greyhounds in the SA industry and call for a phase-out of greyhound racing in South Australia.

You'll find more information to help write your email and a template if you would prefer to use one on our website: https://greyhoundcoalition.com/a-critical-moment-for-sa-greyhounds/

Throughout this reform process greyhounds have continued to suffer dreadfully. Most recently we've seen an ABC article about an SA dog kennel owner who is demanding answers about two underweight greyhounds, one with open wounds who have been placed in her care by GRSA. Link in the comments.

RSPCA South Australia along with local advocacy group Greyhound Welfare Initiative have concluded that the welfare issues within greyhound racing are systemic and there should be a a managed phase-out of the industry.

Thank you for taking action at this crucial time and please let us know if you have any questions or feedback.

Greyhound racing works around the broadcasting timeslots, to maximise betting.

Punters got their first bet on Saturday 6 June 2026 at 7.52am at Taree NSW.

Breakfast gamblers got to see “Moon Butter” suffer a major hip injury.

In later races “She's Seeking” suffered a hock fracture, while “Little Beast” received a serious shoulder injury.

Disturbingly, “Tiger Key Chum” was injured after being forcefully shoved into the starting box - obviously not wanting to race, but not having a choice.

Taree is billed as the “safest track in NSW’ and classed as a “super track” and “centre of excellence”.

Don’t believe the lies and propaganda. It’s just another grubby racetrack that kills and injures dogs and causes harm to communities.

Natasha Robinson, health editor at The Australian, shares a story that will touch the heart of anyone who has known the joy of rescuing a greyhound.

"When my daughter begged me for a dog, I’m afraid to say my decision-making process was rather selfish. I wanted the lowest maintenance, cheapest dog going. What I got changed my life."

"All of my research led to one thing: a rescue greyhound....to adopt a dog that had been bred to be used up and spat out (or worse) by the racing industry. It still blows my mind that these animals with nothing to give but love are bred to race in an often cruel industry; it goes against their gentle, quiet nature."

"Lucy, at nine, is now a grand old lady, and slowly falling in love with her has changed me. It didn’t happen in an instant, but now I fear losing her every day, and the time ahead with Lucy already feels far too short. That brings another gentle lesson: appreciate every day. Love your beautiful dog without expectation. Above all, hold nothing back in returning this purest form of uncomplicated love."

Victorian tracks keep claiming the lives of young dogs at a shocking rate.

Two more died on 3 June.

Black Nevera won his race at Ballarat but fell after the finish, suffering a humerus fracture. The on-track vet euthanased him.

20-month old Demon Yogi fell at The Meadows and suffered fractures to both forelegs. The on-track vet euthanased him.

Of 71 greyhound racing deaths nationwide this year, Victoria has recorded 32, almost half. 12 were killed at tracks, and 20 died post-race after serious injuries.

Demon Yogi and Black Nevera were the 97th and 98th dogs to suffer leg fractures this year in Victoria.

18 greyhounds suffered leg fractures during May alone, and 10 of them are already dead.

There is no outcry from the State Labor Government. Big Gambling calls the shots, and dogs die.

ABC News is reporting that up to 70 greyhounds are expected to be shipped from New Zealand to Queensland ahead of the NZ ban to be imposed at the end of July. The Australian government admits it cannot stop them being used for racing.

The greyhounds will be imported from NZ as "companion animals" with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries stating that they then have no control "as to how they are then used".

An ABC article reports that NSW Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi told a Senate hearing last week that "details of the planned flight emerged through a leaked message from a private greyhound racing group."

CPG president Amy MacMahon asks "How many of these greyhounds will end up dead or injured at The Q, one of the most unsafe tracks in the country?

And if they do survive Queensland's lethal tracks, the greyhounds will then need to be rehomed in Australia which is already in the midst of an ongoing rehoming crisis.

As NZ animal rights charity SAFE has highlighted:

"New Zealanders expected the greyhound racing ban to mark the beginning of a responsible transition focused on the welfare of dogs.

"The priority should be ensuring every greyhound has a safe future after racing, but the industry appears determined to squeeze every last race out of the dogs still in its care."

Australian Dog Lover Magazine has highlighted the shocking number of greyhound deaths and injuries in Victoria.

The article reports that according to racing data collated by CPG “10 Greyhounds have died directly on Victorian tracks in 2026, with a further 20 dogs later dying after sustaining race-related injuries. Seven of these racing deaths occurred in May alone, marking it as the deadliest month so far this year.”

The article goes on to say that “Animal welfare groups and political parties have united in a call for an independent inquiry into Victorian Greyhound racing, following a disturbing surge in track deaths and injuries across the state.”

“An independent parliamentary inquiry into greyhound welfare, regulation and industry oversight in Victoria is urgently needed,” says CPG Victorian Director Steve Cook."

The article also quotes the CEO of Animals Australia Glenys Oogjes, AJP’s Georgie Purcell MP and Victorian Greens Spokesperson for Animals Katherine Copsey MP.
