Kidsafe SA is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to the prevention of unintentional death and injuries to children.

Through the provision of information, education, training and advocacy, and working in collaboration or partnership with like minded organisations, Kidsafe SA works to influence legislation, state and local governments, organisations, communities and families to become more aware of how to reduce preventable unintentional injury in children.

Our PLAY team hit the road for the Mallee, inspecting playgrounds, soaking up the incredible silo art, and even spending the night in a converted bus! 🚌✨ Safe, fun play spaces for kids and a few adventures along the way. Not a bad day at the "office"!

Perfect weather and a fully booked day made our first community fitting and checking day for 2026/27 a great success!

Thank you to the John McVeity Centre in Smithfield for providing the space for our road safety team to meet with all the parents, grandparents and carers.

We know fitting a child car seat can be tricky and daunting. It was wonderful to talk families through best practice for fitting and adjusting their seats, and to help make sure their little ones are travelling safely.

20 kids every week in Australia present to an emergency department because of button batteries.

To show the impact of swallowing a button battery, here's a piece of bacon and a 3V button battery. In less than five minutes, you can see a chemical reaction start that produces sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda. It can cause severe internal burns, and can be fatal.

That's why it's vital to keep button batteries, and anything that uses them, out of reach of young children. Make sure battery compartments are firmly secured, and dispose of flat batteries safely straight away. They're still dangerous.

If you think a child has swallowed or inserted a button battery, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 immediately or go to your nearest emergency department.

Little ones love to put things in their mouths, and small, shiny button batteries can look very appealing. But if a child swallows one, it can get stuck in their throat and burn through the oesophagus in less than 2 hours. The result can be serious injury needing surgery, or even death.

Follow these button battery safety tips to help prevent injury or death to your little ones.

If you think a child has swallowed or inserted a button battery, urgent action is needed. Don’t wait for them to show symptoms, call the Poisons Information Centre urgently for expert advice on what to do, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 13 11 26.

Every week in Australia, about 20 children present to an emergency department with a button battery-related injury - that’s more than 1,000 children every year!

Here are some practical things we can all do to reduce the risk and help keep your family safe:
👀 Look for products that don’t use button batteries
🪛 Make sure the battery compartments are secure on all products
🆙 Even if secure, button battery compartments are not necessarily child-proof, so it’s still a good idea to store these products up high out of the sight and reach of children
🔒 Keep spare button batteries locked away out of sight and reach
🗑️ As soon as you have finished using a button battery, put sticky tape around both sides of it and dispose of it safely
🗣️ Tell others about the dangers and share these steps

Quiet roads don't mean safe roads. 🌳🚶🚗

In regional areas, hidden driveways behind trees or bends can catch anyone off guard. When walking on country roads, look for hidden driveway signs, safe places to cross the road and always teach kids to STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, THINK before crossing.

Whilst reversing cameras and other vehicle technologies can help drivers avoid collisions, they are not a substitute for the close supervision of children when it comes to driveway safety.

⛔ Even if a car has parking sensors or a video camera fitted, drivers may not notice a small child until it is too late.
