Slow Food South Australia

Slow Food South Australia Slow Food South Australia Since then, more than 18 local convivia have been formed across the country.

Slow Food South Australia is part of the global Slow Food network that has grown into a movement involving millions of people in over 160 countries. Founded in 1989 by Italian journalist and environmental activist Carlo Petrini, Slow Food is a non-profit, grassroots organisation that aims to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and peopleโ€™s dwindling inter

est in the food they eat, where it comes from and how it tastes. Supporters of Slow Food recognise that our food choices can make a positive difference in the world โ€“ to people, local communities, animals, plants and the environment. Members and supporters of Slow Food aim to create a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it, good for the surrounding community and good for our planet. The Slow Food approach aims to preserve traditional foods and regional food cultures by supporting the production of food that is good, clean and fair. GOOD: quality, flavoursome and healthy food that satisfies the senses and is part of local culture
CLEAN: production and consumption that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health
FAIR: accessible prices for consumers and fair conditions and pay for producers

South Australian cook Maggie Beer introduced Slow Food to Australia in 1995, when she founded the first convivium in the Barossa region. For years, the Slow Food Adelaide & Barossa convivium has engaged an active membership base, which will continue to grow and thrive in the coming years under the new convivium name Slow Food South Australia. Slow Food South Australia aims to engage and educate local South Australian communities and food producers to discover more about their abundant food heritage and edible biodiversity. This isn't just dinnerโ€”it's a delicious rebellion. Against industrial agriculture. Against overfishing. Against the idea that good food can't be clean, fair, and accessible to all. Together, we're building a future where exceptional meals support thriving local communities and healthy marine ecosystems ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฆ‘

It was a lovely afternoon where Willa and his family, and friends from the Slow Food community, gathered to remember and share stories about Lidia around a shared afternoon tea ๐ŸŒผ

Willa had picked out a unique variety of fig to honour Lidia, a Panache fig tree, that will be planted by the entrance of the orchard ๐ŸŒฑ

Seasons Greetings from Rosa and the whole team at Slow Food South Australia!

2025 has been a year of considerable activity for Slow Food South Australia. We have enjoyed special dinners, long table lunches and initiated many activities and programs to promote Slow Food.

๐ŸŒThe Snail of Approval program is in full swing with 24 recipients (and more to come) across the four categories of Restaurant and Cafe, Producer, Chef, and Food Artisan. They represent great examples of Slow Food in practice. Consider supporting them when you have the opportunity.

๐ŸŒ Our first Youth Ambassadors are busy highlighting the principles of Slow Food in their school and social circles.
๐ŸŒ The workbook for primary schools had its pilot run in three schools and has been implemented in several schools at years three and four.
๐ŸŒ Members have participated in community activities including pop up demonstrations at Farmer's Markets and community workshops and presentations. We are always keen to spread the word about Slow Food.
๐ŸŒ Take time to visit our new, refreshed website.

Our committee continues to evolve. Rosa Matto has taken up the leader role, supported by previous leader Tania Paola as deputy. Our sincere thanks to Gina DalSanto, Nick Tadija, Delphine de'Salisbury and Bhavisha Keshwala who have left the committee. We are delighted to be joined by new committee members Enrico Sgarbossa, Julie Low and Andy Wood.

We are working on the program for 2026 which will be announced early in the new year. Thank you for your support of Slow Food SA and we look forward to seeing you at our events in 2026 โœจ๏ธ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŒ

We would like to congratulate Barossa Valley Ice Cream Company, another fantastic business on receiving their recognition!๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฆ

Since opening their doors in 2012, The Barossa Valley Ice Cream Company has stayed true to their passion: crafting delicious frozen desserts using whole, natural, South Australian ingredients and traditional methods โ€” โ€œthe ice cream we had when we were kids.โ€

Julie and the team source whole milk, pure cream, fruits, nuts directly from SA producers. When ingredients canโ€™t be found locally, they choose only traceable, sustainable, community-minded suppliers โ€” from Sunshine Sugarโ€™s grower-owned co-op to fair-trade chocolate, vanilla and coffee. They will also make small-batch products from seasonal ingredients that locals have generously provided during harvest, including pumpkins, figs, & feijoas.

Sustainability is central to everything they do, from compostable packaging to solar panels that power the factory and feed into two Tesla batteries. Julie also gives back as a qualified Food Safety Supervisor, volunteering with Regional Development Australia Barossa to support new food businesses with safety planning, HACCP guidance and practical industry advice.

Congratulations again to Barossa Valley Ice Cream Company for their commitment to good, clean & fair food ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฆ
