What a night! The 2026 SA Refugee Week Launch "A Million Stories" brought our community together at the historic Adelaide Town Hall to mark 40 years of welcome in South Australia.
We were honoured to be joined by The Hon Nadia Clancy MP, Ms Louise Miller-Frost MP alongside a Welcome to Country from Uncle Major "Moogy" Sumner AM, The Hon Michelle Lensink MLC, The Hon Mira El Dannawi MLC the Hon Tung Ngo MLC, and almost 300 incredible individuals in the room from all walks of life with partners and friends also from interstate.
The evening featured an incredible panel on belonging, contribution and the meaning of home with inspiring leaders, the former governor, The Hon Hieu Van Le AC, Flying Officer Kbora Ali and Vicki Achiro Juma greatly facilitated by Costa Rofe from Department of Home Affairs sharing the message of Unity and Perseverance in protecting the great Australian values. We had powerful performances from Woodville High School's Chamber Strings and Senior Choir, Voice of Lele, and Farhan Shah & Sufi Oz bringing a debut song to the event.
We heard moving stories from various communities who have come to Australia since World War II through a video/documentary starting with First Nations story and greatly introduced by Maria Dimopoulos AM from Settlement Council of Australia and gratitude messages of were given to every participant at the event.
A huge thank you to our wonderful MC Elizabeth Ho OAM, Deputy Chair of AMRC for guiding us through a packed program, and to every organiser who submitted an event. Together we've brought a record of over 115 events across South Australia into this year's SA Refugee Week calendar.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to celebrating the stories, resilience, contributions and diversity across SA. AMRC is incredibly proud to convene the SA Refugee Week. This is just the beginning, SA Refugee Week runs 14–20 June, with events across the state until early July. Check out the full calendar: https://amrc.org.au/sa-refugee-week/
