Hutt St Centre Hutt St Centre is a place of connection and support, where people facing homelessness are empowered to rebuild their lives.

Thank you for supporting our vision to end homelessness. Read our Social Media Terms of Use here: bit.ly/HSCTermsOfUse Hutt St Centre is a place of connection and support, where people facing homelessness are empowered to rebuild their lives, rediscover their identities and reconnect with those who love them. We walk alongside people on their journey to homefulness—a word we use to describe the feeling of safety, control and confidence that comes with having a place to call home. When people walk through our doors we help fulfil their immediate needs, like a shower, a meal, and a charged phone, while our 20+ visiting services provide support ranging from medical check-ups to financial counselling. And with a focus on the future, we connect people with housing, education and employment opportunities to build the skills and confidence to change their circumstances for good.

Our sense of hearing is so much more than just listening to a conversation — hearing loss can lead to loneliness and isolation.

For many people experiencing homelessness, hearing loss can go unnoticed for years. When you’re focused on finding food, shelter and safety, concerns about your hearing often take a back seat.

Thanks to your generous support, our Wellbeing Centre welcomed Hearing Australia to provide free hearing screenings for people doing it tough.

An audiologist fitted people with hearing buds and left a supply with our Wellbeing Centre Officer John, ready for anyone else who might need them. 🧡

Book clubs are great fun for diving into new books and old classics with friends, or to meet new people and connect over a shared love of reading. 📖

Hutt St Centre's Book Club is an open invite for people experiencing homelessness. It's okay if you've read the book (or didn't make it past the front cover), or are just after a safe space to relax for a hot cuppa and a chat. ☕

Watching movies and documentaries are also popular at this Book Club as another way for members to explore new topics and expand their horizons. 🎥

Stepping into the jungles of Rwanda, our Book Club members recently watched A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough, following the journey of a gorilla family. 🦍

It was fascinating to learn more about these magnificent animals — while enjoying some classic movie snacks too, of course! 🍿🍩

Thank you to our community for helping make social groups like Book Club possible, offering wellbeing and connection to people doing it tough. 🧡🙌

A special thank you to our latest Darcy and Max! 🦸‍♂️🧡

The two friends, Darcy and Max, were working together on a school project learning about homelessness and arranged a thoughtful donation to deliver to Hutt St Centre.

Taking time out of their school holidays, they arrived with filled cars and unloaded 70 bottles of olive oil (with help from Darcy's mum), several jars of olives, and a great collection of good-condition clothing too.

Darcy put a lot of thought behind the olive oil donation, and our kitchen team are very excited to put it to good use:

"I am hoping that the centre can use the oil and olives in the kitchen to make the food even tastier and healthier. " 🫒🍽️

Thank you Darcy and Max for generously helping people in need.

Our Hutt Street neighbour, Claire from the Heart Foundation, visited one of our recent Community BBQ meetings.

Community BBQ is a monthly lunch meeting for our visitors to hear updates from staff and support services about what's happening in the Centre, and to give feedback about what they need for their journey to homefulness.

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australia. But as Claire shared, it's not all doom and gloom — there's lots of information and resources on preventing heart disease.

Claire shared about the differences between a heart attack and cardiac arrest, and how to help someone in cardiac arrest:
Call (000), push (start CPR), shock (use a defibrillator).

These three steps can save someone's life.

Our nurse is at Hutt St Centre five days a week , and visiting GPs are here two days a week, to help people experiencing homelessness check their heart health if they have any concerns. 🧡

Thank you to the Heart Foundation for supporting people doing it tough to live free of heart disease. 🙌

Home wasn't a safe place for Grant and his four siblings. There was often fighting, yelling, and each of the siblings got kicked out of home at least once.

Paving his own way forward as a labourer, Grant was able to move out of his childhood home.

But his difficult childhood stuck with him, and Grant turned to alcohol to cope, while struggling to keep a steady job and accommodation.

Life started looking up when Grant met his partner, and they had three children together.

“I really enjoyed being a father and I resolved that I was not going to be like my dad. I love them.”

Determined to be reliable for his family, Grant started counselling. But when he experienced a relapse into drinking, it placed significant strain on his relationship, and the couple eventually parted ways.

Grant had nowhere to live. That's when his counsellor recommended visiting Hutt St Centre

Tim* grew up in a difficult home. Forging a new life for himself, he worked hard, built a successful career as a stonemason, and eventually bought his own home in regional South Australia.

But everything changed when a persistent headache revealed a life-threatening brain tumour – taking his health, his ability to work, and his home.

A man who built homes for a living had nowhere to call home himself, and spent four long years sleeping rough on the streets of Adelaide with his dog Trevor.

Tim knew he needed support — and thankfully found his way to Hutt St Centre. With the care of supporters like you, Tim was met with a gentle welcome and the practical help he needed.
