Recently we explored the Pleasant Creek Abandoned Hospital. It was built in 1861 and used as a district hospital. In 1934 it was acquired by the Mental Hygiene Dept and used to accommodate children with disabilities, by the first year there were 98 children living there. By 1986 it cared for about 160 residents, all who were intellectually disabled. In 1990 an inquiry was ordered into the allegations of sexual assault. The hospital was closed in 1996. Could you imagine as a child being sent to live in such a remote place as this!
