Happy New Week!

We're grateful that we've made it into another week!

If you've ever been curious about how we design community outreach programmes, here are some questions we ask:

✔ Do communities know what they need?
✔ Should we lead with technical expertise?
✔ What should we be listening for?

Although listening is the theme of October, listening isn't about asking communities to do all the thinking for us; It is about making sure we don't do all the thinking without them.

The environment is part of the community🌱
Today, on Mazingira Day, we’re reminded that healthy communities depend on healthy environments.

From the soil farmers depend on to the water we drink and the ecosystems that sustain livelihoods, our environment shapes the opportunities available to communities every day.

At Chiwo Connect, we define sustainable development as thinking beyond today’s needs and considering what we are leaving for the people and communities that come after us.

At Chiwo Connect, we believe that listening means making room for more than the loudest voice.

To us, participation means creating space for different experiences, perspectives, and ways of contributing.

When more voices are part of the conversation, we have a better chance of understanding the whole picture - and building responses, programs, and answers that truly reflect the people they’re meant to serve.

As we’ve established, October is our listening month. But what does that actually look like?

Saying “we listen to communities” is easy.

The real question is: Can people see it in the way we work?

Listening in community development is not simply sitting in a meeting and taking notes. It shows up in the choices we make, the questions we ask, and what we do with what we hear.

Here are a few ways it can look:

1. Asking before assuming.

2. Creating safe spaces to speak honestly.

3. Noticing what is not being said.

4. Closing the feedback loop.

5. Being willing to adapt.

Listening is not a single activity. It is a way of working!

So this October, we're not just asking communities to speak.
We're paying attention to what happens after they do.
