🚨 News from Australia 🚨

Four Fijians have been sentenced in Western Australia after being caught in a failed $300 million co***ne smuggling operation.

The men – Isaac Henry Rabuatoka, Filipe Valesu, Laban Saininaivalu, and William Seru – were among six jailed after authorities intercepted 2.4 tonnes of co***ne in December 2022 and replaced it with fake packages.

What was meant to be a massive drug haul turned into what the judge described as a “shambles … a disaster,” after their boats ran aground and the operation collapsed.

✍🏽 Sentences:
▪️ Valesu – 11 years
▪️ Rabuatoka – 10 years
▪️ Seru – 6 years
▪️ Saininaivalu – 5 years

This case is a stark reminder of how drug cartels use Pacific Islanders as pawns in their schemes — with devastating consequences for our people and families.

🕊️ Faith planted in Pilbara soil, now taking root...

On Saturday, 28th June, history was made as the very first service of the Port Hedland Fijian Uniting Church was held—marking a powerful new beginning for the Fijian community in WA’s northwest.

The service was beautifully led by Rev Vini Ravetali alongside the President of the Uniting Church in Australia, Rev Charissa Suli, whose presence brought warmth, encouragement, and national support to this local milestone.

A special contribution was also made by Retired Fijian Methodist Church Minister, Rev William Lucas, whose words carried the wisdom of generations and the deep faith of our Fijian spiritual heritage.

This historic occasion was made possible through a heartfelt partnership between the WA Synod, Presbytery of WA, Frontier Services, UCA Assembly, UCA Fiji National Conference, and the committed efforts of the Fijian community of Port Hedland, whose unity (yalovata), strength (i gu), and unwavering faith turned vision into reality.

As Rev Vini shared:
“To our Fijian community of Hedland… I’m in awe of you all! Vinaka vakalevu sara na veiqaravi levu, nai gu, kei na yalovata! To God be the glory—great things He has done!”

We celebrate this new place of worship as a beacon of belonging, spiritual growth, and cultural pride—for today, and for generations to come.

Canberra catch-up vibes!

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka sat down with our Fijian vuvale in the capital several days ago, having talanoa on everything from boosting remittances to beating the drug trade back home.

He thanked the diaspora for the dollars, ideas and advocacy that keep Fiji’s sails full, urged us to keep investing (and behaving!) in our adopted home, and opened the floor to fresh thinking on nation-building. Cabinet heavy-hitters joined in, covering trade, policing, border security and more.

Big takeaway? Fiji’s future isn’t just on the islands—it’s wherever Fijians stand together. Let’s keep the momentum rolling!

LEST WE FORGET - A MOMENT OF HONOUR IN CANBERRA

Several days ago, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka paid tribute at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, laying a wreath during the solemn Last Post Ceremony in remembrance of Australia’s fallen heroes.

Joined by his delegation, the Prime Minister reflected on the courage and sacrifice of those who served – men and women who gave everything for the freedom we now enjoy.

As he shared the timeless words:

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old...”
we were reminded of our collective duty to honour the past, cherish the present, and serve the future.

As a Fijian community living in Australia, this moment reminds us of the strong bonds between our nations – forged not only through diplomacy but through shared sacrifice, values, and respect.

Let us continue to honour those who served.
Life ends, but our responsibility to remember continues.

Lest we forget.
