Happy New Year!

What are your gardening plans/goals for 2026?

We are gearing up for the Harvest Festival in February when we open our garden up to the public for the first time. Which means ensuring the edible side of the garden is flourishing. But the rest of the garden beds to look good so we are busy beavering away at jobs we've had on our 'To do list' for years.

Succession planting is the key to continuous supply and from the planting guide there are punnets in the greenhouse with lettuce, rocket, coriander, and spring onion. In the garden I have direct sown radish, dill and pak choi.

One of my goals is to update the planting guide. The difference between the hills and the plains is not as big as it once was. You can easily put a crop of the plants with an asterisk next to them and I will be doing just that.

A second crop of tomatoes, zucchinis and cucumbers is definitely worth it. Plants started in Spring will lose their puff by early Autumn and production will slow down. Planting another crop now will result in plants in top gear in Autumn. Yes, you can make the zucchini season go on and on and on..... 🀣

The caveat is those in areas that get heavy frosts as an early Autumn frost will wipe out your best laid plans. It's a gamble that I take every year and often it pays off.

The layers to the no dig garden are:

1. Gypsum
2. Cardboard
3. Twigs and leaves
4. Pea straw
5. Mushroom compost
6. Plants
5. More pea straw
6. Organic mulch

Now we should get some lovely pollinators to visit πŸπŸ¦‹

Thanks to Green Adelaide for funding this initiative πŸ’š

Thanks to the wonderful group of volunteers who came out today together with Kym Ormond to build our first no-dig native pollinator garden!

This area of the garden has services underneath and is compacted, so we opted for a no dig garden, which involves creating layers like a birthday cake above the soil to build the garden up from the ground πŸŽ‚ Like the name suggests, there is no digging needed!

πŸ“ˆ Initially we spent a bit of time levelling the soil roughly with spades as it's on a slope
πŸͺ΅ We laid out the timber edging and screwed the edges together
πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ We added gypsum as the bottom layer of the garden bed to help break down the clay
πŸ“¦ Cardboard was next to stop w**d growth
πŸ‚ Leaves and sticks were put on top which will break down over time
πŸ„ Mushroom compost was next along with some aged cow manure
πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ Then came the some garden soil/compost mix
🌱 Our native plants finally went in! We had lots of native grasses along with some goodenia, paper daisies and karkalla.
🌸 We topped it off with a lovely mulch layer.
πŸ’§ Of course our garden was then completed with a lovely watering!

Gradually the plants will grow their roots into the soil below, helped along by the gypsum layer underneath to break down the clay. We hope to bring in lots of bees, butterflies and other pollinators πŸπŸ¦‹

Thanks to Green Adelaide for the grant to make this happen!
