Thanks to Green Adelaide and City of Mitcham for the Bee and Butterfly Gardening session this evening. Presented to Outdoor Spaces Volunteers at the Pasadena Community Centre we all had a great time learning about ways to support native bees and butterflies in our backyards and the places we volunteer.

For anyone who would like to keep learning, there is an online webinar coming up Wednesday evening

"Join Dr Kit 'Bee Babette' Prendergast and Clancy 'Bee Man' Lester in an engaging deep dive into the importance of scicomm when it comes to conserving native bees. You'll learn what bee washing is, have some bee myths busted, and find out what are some pressing messages everyone needs to be shouting about so we can avert the crisis in native bee conservation.

Date: May 20th, 1700h AWST / 1900h AEST

Cost: $5"

Some of the local legends from PASMAG attended the City of Mitcham Volunteer Thank You Event at the Mitcham cinema today. Sandy (with Poppie), Alex, Kerrie and Virginia all reported The Sheep Detectives was a great choice of movie for the event. You will often find these four sharing their skills as gardeners in parks, verges, private homes and at the Pasadena Community Centre.

If you're keen on becoming a volunteer with the City of Mitcham or with PASMAG, email [email protected].

That's another verge garden in St Marys! If you're looking for inspiration this planting season, why not head to Mingbool Ave between Cashel and St Marys Street. Neighbours have been helping each other out with plants, to dig holes and fill out the online paperwork. Doing things together makes it easier and builds community.

Species planted today include native oxalis, Vitadinnias, native grasses and Pelargonium australe. Likely more coming too!

If you're keen to landscape your verge in Pasadena or St Marys and need some advice, we are happy to help. Email [email protected].

Pocket Park Pals, Virginia, Kerrie, Nat and Alex spent some time in the NW patch in Thurles Street Reserve before the rain this morning.

The team were preparing the area for winter planting.

This patch was originally established by students from Pasadena Kindy, St Bernadette's Primary School, Springbank Secondary College and community members for a City of Mitcham National Tree Day planting in 2022.

PASMAG took over the maintenance of the site and have been learning what native plants are best for the area. Cynoglossum Australe, native forget me not, has been a challenge due to the very sticky seeds. Volunteers are thinning it out. Every site is different but in this patch, it's not quite right.

In good news, there is a wonderful variety of native species with little blue flowers available as an alternative like:

Linum marginale
Dianella
Dampiera rosmarinifolia
Stemodia florulenta

We put this map up today of Pasadena and St Marys at the Pasadena Community Centre .

Volunteers from the Pasadena And St Marys Action Group were discussing the ways our area has changed over the years and how so many of those changes are found through conversation with neighbours with long memories or an interest in local history.

If you want to share memories, we'd love to hear about them or read about them!

Send us an email to [email protected] or post a comment. We would be happy to chat over a coffee too.

Huge thanks to volunteers, community centre & council staff and resident artist Christina for the display.

Things to think about:
๐Ÿ  Where did you live? Is your home different or the same?
๐Ÿ›Where did you play? Were you part of a sports club? Did you play in the street?
๐Ÿซ Where did you learn? Did you go to school or kindy in the area? Did you go to Guides or Scouts?
๐ŸŒณ Was there a garden you liked or did you climb a favourite tree?
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Where did you do your shopping? Was there a deli or post office or hairdresser you went to?
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Are there neighbours you remember?
๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Is there a building that has changed, no longer exists?

From momentous occasions to everyday tasks, it's all interesting and could lead to some great memories and practical help for future projects.

Isn't this gorgeous! Cullen australasicum, native scurf pea grows well in our neighbourhood too. We planted a couple in the Pollinator Garden near the Pasadena Community Centre . Our experience is that these plants don't have a long life and can look a bit scraggly to some folks BUT they reseed if you just let them do their thing. Don't despair if they die sooner than you expected, just keep an eye out for the little seedlings nearby. A really beautiful plant for anyone who wants to encourage pollinators and loves a splash of purple in the garden.

Love this message from our friends at Trees For Life (SA) . We do what we can here in Pasadena and St Marys. If you're keen to help out in our corner of the world, consider volunteering with us.
Email [email protected] to get involved or just to chat.

It really is that simple. Whether it's a backyard, a patch of bush, or a paddock on the edge of town, every corner cared for adds up to something much bigger than ourselves.

What corner of the world are you caring for? Tell us below ๐Ÿ‘‡

With thanks to Sam's mum for donating this gorgeous copy of Costa's World. We will be adding it to our collection of books to inspire community action and connection. Thanks to Costa for signing the book today at the Burnside Environment Expo. Great to hear his talk too titled From Overwhelm to Opportunity which highlighted the hyper local and individual actions that can make a positive impact in our community.
