What to Do If You Drank Again While Trying to Quit

It happens. You’ve been trying to cut back or quit drinking, and then last night, it happened again—you drank. It can be frustrating, disappointing, and even overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that this doesn’t define your journey. Here’s what to do if you find yourself in this situation:

1. **Be So Kind To Yourself**
First, take a deep breath. Guilt and shame only make things harder. Remind yourself that recovery isn’t linear, and setbacks are part of the process. Be compassionate with yourself, as you would be with a friend.

2. **Reflect Without Judgment**
Ask yourself why it happened. Were you stressed, socializing, or using alcohol to cope with emotions? Understanding the trigger or activation is key to avoiding or dealing with it next time. Keep a journal or make mental notes of patterns so you can create better strategies moving forward.

3. **Reaffirm Your Commitment**
This is a good time to reconnect with your reasons for quitting. Write them down again or share them with a friend. Whether it’s for your health, mental clarity, or a sense of freedom, reaffirming why you’re on this path can help reignite your determination.

4. **Take Action Immediately**
It’s tempting to throw in the towel after a setback, but resist the urge. Instead, focus on small, positive actions. Hydrate, eat nourishing food, and get moving. Each healthy choice will bring you closer to feeling back on track.

5. **Reach Out for Support**
Whether it’s a support group, a therapist, or a trusted friend, don't hesitate to reach out. Being open about struggles helps you feel less alone and reminds you that you don’t have to navigate this journey by yourself.

Remember, trying to quit is an act of strength, not weakness. Keep moving forward, even on the harder days. The path to change can be bumpy, but with every step, you’re learning, growing, and becoming more resilient.
