A new handheld ultrasound vein finder is set to improve patient care at the Hawker Memorial Hospital thanks to a $7,241 donation from Masonic Charities | The Grand Lodge of Freemasons SA & NT, supported by Quorn Lodge No.59.
The funding has enabled the Hawker Hospital Auxiliary to purchase a Butterfly handheld ultrasound vein finder machine, which will assist doctors and nursing staff in delivering faster, safer and more comfortable treatment for patients across the Hawker and Flinders Ranges communities.
The equipment will help staff locate veins in difficult cases, particularly for elderly patients, babies and people requiring urgent treatment or ongoing medical care. The device can also be used for a range of bedside diagnostic procedures including bladder scans, nerve blocks, fetal heart rate monitoring and identifying foreign bodies or infections.
Importantly, the Hawker Memorial Hospital is the last hospital north along the Outback Highway, servicing not only local residents but also travellers, tourists and remote communities throughout the Flinders Ranges region.
Members of the Hawker Hospital Auxiliary, hospital staff and representatives from Quorn Lodge recently gathered for a special afternoon tea and cheque presentation to celebrate the donation and acknowledge the strong community partnership behind the project.
During the presentation, Nurse Unit Manager Kate Ticehurst demonstrated the new machine and explained how it would support staff in delivering improved bedside care, while Acting EO and Director of Nursing Trudy Bowshire highlighted the benefits the technology would bring to patients and clinicians alike.
Quorn Lodge members, including Scott and John Teague, supported the application after recognising the important role the Hawker Memorial Hospital plays in supporting both the local community and the many travellers and emergency cases passing through the region each year.
Freemasons SA & NT, through Masonic Charities, continues to support practical projects that strengthen healthcare services and improve outcomes for regional South Australians.
