Lenger Reserve covers 95 hectares on Nganguruku land near Mannum. It was donated to the National Trust of South Australia in 1978 by Rudolph Gustav Lenger, to be used as a bird sanctuary.

Saunders Creek meanders through the reserve and contains several permanent spring-fed waterholes separated by reed beds – which is why the area is affectionately known as 'the springs' by locals. Our Natural Heritage Manager revisits her childhood memories of running wild at Lenger Reserve.

Last year, the National Trust of SA received a special request that led to a heart-warming surprise.
A painting of the “Monarch of the Glen” red gum, by Adelaide artist William Fraser Wilson, had long been part of our collection. But when his granddaughter Jen shared the tree’s deep family significance, it prompted a careful and considered process.
After thoughtful review, the painting was returned to Wilson’s widow, Beatrice, as a surprise on the eve of her 103rd birthday. Today, it hangs beside her bed - a treasured reminder of her husband and the landscape they loved.
This story offers a glimpse into how we approach requests relating to collection items.

National Trust SA Costume Curator Sandy Whitelaw shared with us this fascinating story of a beautiful wedding dress created in 1930 for a woman who thought we should never marry. Mary McEwen was a member of one of Port Pirie's pioneer families, with her family having come out from Stirling, Scotland in 1856. Mary was born in 1870.
