Professor Françoise Dussart discusses the challenges Professor Nancy Munn—one of the first female Fulbright scholars from America to undertake research in Australia— faced in the 1950s and 1960s when she carried out fieldwork with the Warlpiri people living at Yuendumu, and later with the Pitjantjatjara people at Utju. Following Munn in the field underscores how who anthropologists work with matters and changes through time. Dussart further examines how Munn in her seminal monograph Walbiri Iconography elucidated how the connections between sacred artistic drawings and paintings, the Central Australian Desert landscape and Aboriginal Ancestral Beings represent “stable anchors of identity” for Indigenous people.

A new funding scheme designed to support Working Group research teams, focusing on Enhancing Gender Justice through Transdisciplinary Research.

💰 Grants up to $80,000 to promote impactful research.

📅 Round 1 applications close: 5pm, Tuesday 4 February 2025.

📆 Projects run for 12-24 months and must begin within 6 months of award.

🎯 Six projects will be funded between 2024 and 2028, across three rounds (2025-2027).

Our grants scheme supports projects and events that contribute to our overall objectives to:
- Advance gender and sexuality research, and take feminist and intersectional approaches to research;
- Aim to inform gender-related public policy;
- Promote gender equity through research.

ANU Gender Institute members can request up to $7,000 for events and projects and up to $15,000 for a Signature Event to be held in 2024

This special round of funding aims at developing fresh collaborations, both across our network and with gender researchers outside ANU.

Our Research Funding for Working Groups invites you to develop a team of researchers engaged with an innovative common theme. We invite proposals for working groups which propose a gender and/or sexuality project with potential to address an issue of national and/or international significance.

Funding for working groups is held annually, and provides up to $12,000 for working group projects commencing work in 2024

This GI funded project is an ongoing practice-based investigation into Australia’s contribution to the Astrographic Catalogue, an international endeavour to photograph and catalogue stars to create a map of the celestial sphere in the 19th century.

A workforce of women were employed to work as human computers on this project between 1890 and 1964. Their work in measuring the positions of the stars was a major contribution to the Astrographic Catalogue that is under-acknowledged in its published documentation. Check out the project here:
