It's National Carers Week.

This year's theme, "Care for a carer: Making carers visible," reminds us to recognise and support the invaluable contribution of carers who play an essential role in supporting many lives, yet their voices, needs and contributions are too often overlooked.

As we head towards the November state election, we're working with our members and partners to ensure mental health carers' voices are heard and valued.

Join us at our upcoming events and add your voice. Together, we can help put all mental health carers in the picture.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day.

This year's theme, "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change", reflects the heart of Tandem's election campaign, "Put all mental health carers in the picture."

Mental health carers have invaluable lived experience, yet their voices are too often overlooked in decisions that affect them and the people they support. Real change happens when carers are heard, recognised and included.

As we head towards the November state election, we're calling on all parties and candidates to listen to mental health carers and commit to the support, recognition and services they need.

Victoria’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect centres are the only places that provide dedicated support for mental health carers. But with only eight centres across the entire state, most of Victoria’s estimated 280,000 mental health carers don’t have access.

In November’s state election, Tandem is calling for all parties to commit to the Connect centres and expand their reach, so more mental health carers can access crucial support.

You can help make this a reality by contacting your local state election candidates and asking them to make a commitment.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Awareness Week (1-7 October) is an opportunity to build understanding, challenge stigma, and recognise the importance of connection, compassion and support for people living with BPD and those who care about them.

This year's theme," Connection Changes Outcomes: In BPD, Every Interaction Matters," reminds us that feeling heard, understood and supported can make a profound difference.

At Tandem, we know that families, carers and supporters play an important role in the lives of people living with BPD, but very often their contributions go unseen.

As part of our election campaign, we're calling for greater recognition and support for mental health carers and a system that considers carers as partners in care.

People experiencing a mental health crisis need a health response, not a police response.

This is an issue that matters deeply to Victorians who support people with mental health challenges.

It was a priority for Tandem members during the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System and has remained a priority in the years since.

Tandem acknowledges Victoria’s new Mental Health Crisis Response Protocols as a step towards this important reform and is looking forward to more detail on how implementation of these protocols will be resourced .

It is also essential that specialist outreach capacity and community-based crisis services can meet growing demand.

“We urge the Victorian Government to engage effectively with all services and stakeholders and build on the experiences and advice that Tandem and our members have already shared,” says Tandem CEO, Merewyn Foran.

“Getting this right is critical.”
