Seit 1980 im Vorstand der Medienwerkstatt Wien, seit 2016 Privatdozentin für Medienkunst mit Schwerpunkt künstlerischer Forschung. Zahlreiche internationale Ausstellungen und Präsentationen. Preise u.a. 1992 Österreichischer Förderungspreis für Videokunst, 1999 Anerkennungspreis des Landes Niederösterreich für Medienkunst, 2005 Nominierung für den Internationalen Medienpreis für Wissenschaft und Kunst des ZKM, 2005 Karl-Hofer-Preis der Universität der Künste Berlin, 2006 Würdigungspreis des Landes Niederösterreich für Medienkunst, 2013 Österreichischer Kunstpreis für Video- und Medienkunst, 2022 Preis für den originellsten künstlerischen Beitrag für Lichtfelder - The End of Language – Wittgenstein Reimagined.

Bringing something to life – this idiom can be interpreted in many ways, while at the same time describing a creative act in the literal sense. Gerda Lampalzer reinterprets this expression in a very personal way in her exhibition of the same name. She creates an interweaving of media art, family artefacts and textile objects that relate to one another in a kind of space-filling assemblage.
For her installation piece ‘Swimming Sisters‘, she asked friends who love the water to contribute short reflections on their thoughts and feelings while swimming. These can be read on small, colourful LED tickers attached to the swimmers’ swimsuits, which hang on the wall.
A long-standing interest in water, swimming and bathing is also evident in a modular video arrangement that brings together water-related works spanning five decades. This interest is no coincidence. Thanks to her family’s tradition of ‘beach holidays’, Gerda Lampalzer spent her summers by the water for many years. Her father kept detailed records in his notebooks of travel itineraries, daily activities, notable events and the associated expenses.
Gerda Lampalzer combines these finds from the family archive with her colourful crocheted and embroidered diagrams from the ‘Parainformation‘ series. Their originally fictional meanings form a surprising connection with the ‘statistics’ from her father’s travel diaries. Memories are evoked, along with possible and imaginary facts, while visitors are invited to form their own interpretations of the diagrams… (read full version on our website)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

The self we inhabit is never one thing, and it is never only its own. It is a gathering of relations, shaped through encounters with other beings, materials, and worlds. Yet dominant systems of power, built around human superiority and narrow ideas of who and what counts as normal, enforce fixed divisions, often violently, severing the relations that connect all of us, human and more-than-human alike. These divisions leave us isolated and categorized, with little room for ways of being and becoming that are fluid, unruly, and glitched.

Becoming Chimeric is an evolving workshop practice that invites participants to refuse these cuts, resist these constraints, and reclaim the weird, the monstrous, and the hybrid as ways of being, becoming, and relating. Through hands-on experimentation with generative systems and extended-reality technologies, the workshop cultivates a space for imagining identities as mutable, relational, and entangled. Glitching and chimering form a choreography through which we stitch ourselves back into relation, building hybrid self-bodies in kinship with other beings, materials, and worlds. To become chimeric is to practice inter-being: to glitch with others, remembering that nothing is ever truly separate and that we are always in chimeric kinship.

The exhibition „I AM THE ONE WHO IS IN CONTROL“ consists of objects that represent the past, the present, and the future. They are a mixture of cultures, eras, and societies, carrying traces of many different histories while existing in the same moment. The objects reflect the state of the world we live in today: the deep roots of culture that we continue to value and preserve, and at the same time the constant consumption and exhaustion of our surroundings. They exist within a contradiction—a crisis of preservation and consumption.
The entire scene is shaped by the ever-growing empowerment of the human hand, constantly trying to control this imbalance. The same hand that preserves also transforms, consumes, and creates. The objects are at once relics and mere toys. They hold the possibility of being sacred and ordinary at the same time. The things we create and pray to are also the things we play with.

Currently based in Vienna, Eva Balayan (ARM) is a multidisciplinary artist who’s works blend traditional techniques and digital technologies to tell about personal memories and express ideas of social structures, tradition, history, and consciousness. About the Book:
It is an open secret that the hardware in our smart devices apart from plastics also contains raw materials mined in conflict regions. Can we move beyond this oppressive system of extraction to find ethical alternatives? Feminist hackers Patrícia J. Reis and Stefanie Wuschitz discuss developing technology through eco-feminist artistic tools, rooted in care economies, local knowledges and collective survival. Through an intensive knowledge-sharing process and collaboration with peers, they unpack eco-feminist theory and practices to propose resistance strategies grounded in ethical hardware and de-growth economies – contributing significantly to the new field of arts-based research.
