The most prestigious recognition of the Justitia Award, honouring women with outstanding impact, leadership, and lifelong achievements in the legal profession: Category 1: International Leaders & Lifetime Achievement - Austria🏆

⚖️ Ursula Plassnik Lawyer. Diplomat. Foreign Minister of Austria. Member of Parliament. Special Envoy for Women Affairs. She has championed gender equality from Vienna to the United Nations, making Security Council Resolutions a living policy reality. For decades, she has inspired women to step into the rooms where the world is shaped.
⚖️ Johanna Eteme Since 1999, a relentless force for human rights within Austria’s toughest institutional environment. She built human rights-based policing from the ground up. She implemented hate crime recording. She trained police up to management level. She forged dialogue between the state and civil society. Year after year. Decade after decade. Never giving up.
⚖️ Martina Chudejova Dual-qualified attorney and tax adviser. Partner at Dietrich Rechtsanwälte. Doctoral degree completed during parental leave. A role model for women and young people with immigrant backgrounds, and a voice for structural reform in a profession where family responsibility is still treated, too often, as a career flaw.

The Gala is on September 11, 2026, Vienna

🎓🌍Category 2: Academia - International Edition.
These women are not just studying the law. They are rewriting it. Across three countries, three extraordinary legal scholars are reshaping the profession from the classroom, the courtroom, and the corridors of power.
🇳🇱 Linda Senden Professor of EU law at Utrecht University and coordinator of the European Equality Law Network’s gender stream for over 30 years. Her Horizon Europe RE-WIRING project is dismantling the structural root causes of gendered power hierarchies in institutions. And in 2026? She becomes the UN Women Representative of the Netherlands. Three decades of scholarship. A lifetime of impact.
🇺🇸 Rebecca Epstein Founder and Executive Director of the Center on Gender Justice & Opportunity at Georgetown Law. She put “adultification bias” in the Oxford English Dictionary. She reshaped how the White House, Congress, and the US Department of Justice understand the criminalization of women and girls. She trains judges. She gives incarcerated girls a voice. She changes lives.
🇭🇷 Antonija Petričušić Professor at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb. She launched Croatia’s first academic course on Women’s Rights. She built a School of Gender Equality across five Croatian law faculties. In 2026 she gathered 32 future women’s rights advocates for an intensive programme and convened a leading international conference drawing experts from eight countries. One person. Enormous reach.

Can you feel it? The Gala is getting close. ⚖️🔥 September 11, 2026 - Vienna

📚 The shortlists keep coming, and so does the excitement. 🔥
Category 2: Academia 🎓 honouring women who are transforming legal education and advancing gender equality in law.
Today: Austria’s academic powerhouses. 🇦🇹
These women aren’t just shaping law on the page, they’re shaping the next generation of legal minds who will carry it forward.
🎓Susanne Hochreiter Chair of the Working Group on Equal Treatment at the University of Vienna where she is holding responsibility for 100,000 students and 10,000 employees. A literary scholar turned equality champion. In 2024, she co-founded “Wissenschaft für Demokratie” (Science for Democracy). Integrity, courage, and dialogue in every room she enters.
🎓Susanne Auer-Mayer Professor and Head of the Institute for Labour Law and Social Security Law at WU Vienna. Her research on the EU Pay Transparency Directive and algorithmic discrimination isn’t just theoretically rigorous, it’s already changing how institutions structure their pay practices. Equal pay is her mission. The evidence is her weapon.
🎓Iris Eisenberger Professor of Innovation and Public Law at the University of Vienna. AI law pioneer in a field still dominated by men. Adviser to the Austrian Parliament and the European Parliament. Because great research should never stay on the shelf.

September 11, 2026 - Vienna 🎉 The countdown is on.

Category 3: Game Changers / Pioneers / Young Achievers - International Edition ✨
These three women are rewriting the rules. On different continents, in different systems, but with the same relentless drive for justice.
✨Gresa Caka-Nimani Former President of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo. She delivered landmark rulings embedding the European Convention on Human Rights and the Istanbul Convention into Kosovo’s legal fabric while navigating politically turbulent times and multiple constitutional crises. She didn’t just lead a court. She built the future of constitutionalism in her country and left behind a strong institution with clear pathways for those who come next.
✨Jone Elizondo-Urrestarazu A legal pioneer who turned intersectionality from theory into law. As a key architect of the 2024 EU Directives on Standards for Equality Bodies, she has helped reshape access to justice across Europe for the people who fall through the cracks of existing legal systems. Her doctoral research was ahead of its time. Her impact is felt right now.
✨Maliha Zia Lari A feminist lawyer with two decades in Pakistan’s male-dominated legal landscape. She drafted legislation, built criminal justice responses to sexual violence from the ground up, and in 2025 helped drive the highest-ever r**e conviction rate in Sindh: 17%. Because change isn’t just written in laws, it’s measured in lives.

The time is here, the shortlist is ready🎊. We start with Category 3: Game Changers / Pioneers / Young Achievers (Austria)
The nominees in this category are a game changer who has made an impact in the promotion of innovative approaches resulting in opportunities for women in law and young legal professionals who have shattered the glass ceiling in her field. This includes new working methods where “business as usual” has failed and innovative “out-of-the-box” solutions have succeeded.

Meet our three nominees:
Larissa Arthofer At just 20, she completed her Mag. iur. at the University of Vienna in 1.5 years, breaking the record as the fastest graduate in the programme’s history. She is already a recognised voice in AI and law, with award-winning research on algorithmic justice.
Claudia Fochtmann-Tischler M&A Partner, co-founder of the Women in M&A initiative, and mother of three. She proves every day that a high-impact international legal career and family are not a trade-off, and she actively works to make sure the next generation of lawyers doesn’t have to choose either.
Johanna Eteme Since 1999, a relentless force for human rights within Austria’s toughest institutional environment. She built human rights-based policing from the ground up by implementing hate crime recording in police statistics, training officers all the way to management level, and forging dialogue between civil society and the state.

Did you know the EU’s new digital health system has no explicit protection for reproductive data? 🤔
Abortion records. Fertility treatments. Pregnancy outcomes. All potentially exposed across borders.
Maida breaks it all down in her latest article and on the International Day of Action for Women’s Health, there’s no better moment to ask: is Europe’s digital progress actually protecting women, or leaving them behind?

As part of our overarching conference theme, “Women’s Rights are Human Rights: From Backlash to Equity 2.0,” our opening track tackles one of the defining challenges of our time: the growing backlash against gender equality and inclusion.

We are excited to welcome an exceptional group of women whose work spans law, policy, academia, and advocacy:
✨ Margaret Thornton (Australia): Emerita Professor at the Australian National University and a leading voice in feminist legal scholarship.
✨ Barbara Giovanna Bello (Italy): Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of Tuscia, whose work explores equality, digital justice, and legal theory in action.
✨ Sandra Yamate (US): Founder of the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession and trailblazing advocate for diversity and inclusion in the legal field.
Together, they will bring invaluable perspectives to this critical dialogue on resistance, resilience, and the future of women’s rights.

Yes, we invited men to a gender equality panel. On purpose. 😉
If men still hold many positions of influence in business, politics, and society, then the real question is not whether they should be part of the conversation but how they can use that influence responsibly.
This track explores what meaningful allyship actually looks like beyond hashtags and panel buzzwords:
➡️ challenging toxic masculinity
➡️ engaging younger generations
➡️ creating cultures where equality is everyone’s job, not just women’s homework
Because being an ally is not about “saving” women. It’s about helping build systems where fairness, opportunity, and respect are the standard for everyone.
Excited to welcome our speakers and dive into the conversation 👏
